Mounties have busted what has been dubbed the largest cockfighting ring in Canada following a joint raid on three Surrey properties this week.
Hundreds of roosters were seized and destroyed today after warrants were issued on three separate properties on the border between Cloverdale and the affluent south Surrey community of Morgan Creek.
The B.C. Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said it was the largest cockfighting bust in Canadian history.
Surrey RCMP Staff Sgt. Bruce Anderson estimated upwards of 1,000 roosters were culled and a number of rifles seized. He could not say today if any arrests were made.
The raid involved 14 special BCSPCA constables, 11 RCMP members - from Surrey and the Integrated Illegal Gaming Enforcement Team - and three Surrey bylaw officers.
Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts said she was stunned to hear cockfighting was allegedly going on in her city, especially "a stone's throw from Morgan Creek and its multimillion-dollar homes.
"To have this act going on in Surrey isn't something we accept or condone," she said. "It's important to really make sure people understand that though this is accepted practice in other countries, it's not here."
