As a kid, my dad downplayed his German heritage, but now that I am an adult and am starting to see history from the German perspective, I identify more and more with my German side.

It's wonderful that you know your heritage is such detail. I'm half German myself (unfortunately the family name was slightly altered because of cowardice vis a vis anti-German propaganda in the USA starting with the First World War and continuing ever since).

All I know is that my paternal grandparent came from a small town in East Prussia, near Konigsberg, and that my paternal grandmother is from another small town in the mountains of Bavaria near the Austrian border.

My maternal grandfather was German speaking, from the Sud Tyrol/Alto Adige. My maternal grandmother, the only grandparent alive when I was growing up, was from a mountain village in Lazio - Atina. She met my grandfather when she, a shepardess tending her flock in the mountains, offered him water to drink from a nearby stream as he was walking home (!) from military service. After immigrating to this God forsaken moral, spiritual and intellectual wasteland (IE Amerika), they met again, fell in love and married years later! How is that for far out?

My grandmother was one hell of a formidable woman and she was a devoted, fanatical Fascist all her life. She taught me how great both Hitler and Mussolini were, and how great are and always will be Germany and Italy.

So, I'm half German and half Italian, or 3/4 German and 1/4 Italian depending on how you want to look at it.

i would do it if i were you, it takes about 6 months once you get the papers in. then you would not just be an irish citizen but an EU citizen and if you wanted, you could wander about europe with no hastle

This is hair splitting (I don't mean you, but those who push this angle) in order to deprive Germany of what are basically German/German speaking territories.

Plenty of Italian speakers in the French provinces of Nice and Savoy (the hereditary homeland of the old Italian monarchs, the House of Savoy). Plenty of German speakers in the French provinces of Alsace and Lorraine.

Many Tuscan speaking Italians can't communicate with Sicilians or Sardinians as the dialects are so separate as to virtually constitute different, if albeit, related romance languages. And, of course, in the Alto Adige, many speak what they always have - German.

Stalin murdered most of the large numbers of Ethnic Germans in the Ukraine, so that's no issue anymore. And 'Poland' with her wildly shifting borders, expelled all Germans, along with most of South and Latin America, the Czechs, etc., after the last genocidal war on Germany.

The Dutch, Flemish and Danes are largely German in blood, culture and language; those places are really German in most ways (the Dutch were the largest contingent in the SS after the Germans themselves, for instance). Not to take anything away - from the Danes in particular - a superb people with a great culture. But then, Bavarians are a superb people with a great culture, and so are the Prussians, etc.

yeah, it's a real pity Konigsberg (city of Kant, seven bridges, rich German history going back a thousand years) doesn't exist anyomre, although I understand the Russians living there are starting to learn about the history of "Kaliningrad."

And, of course, in the Alto Adige, many speak what they always have - German.


yeah, about 20 years ago when I was taking a family trip around Italy, then driving to Germany, we stopped in the Alto-Adige and my dad didn't realize they spoke German there, so he was trying to communicate in his bad Italian when they realized he was German and told him they all spoke German there.

In my opinion, besides being the single most beautiful place on earth, the Alto Adige is also home of the world's best food....can't think of anything better than that elegant mix of German and Italian, which, like the clean, pure air, is lighter than regular Italian or German cooking. And what wonderful white wines, particularly the Gewurztraminer.

Western Montana and some of Idaho are as beautiful, but .... no culture, no good food, and no wine. Italy wins, overwhelmingly.

My family hails from the Commonwealth of Dominica, and I'm through and through American. :)
