Is there some kind of concensus on this issue? Do the Ashkenazim hail from the region that they now occupy (Israel), or are they "merely" descendants of those scallywag Khazars?

Personally, I tend to trust the findings of their own genetic studies - biased though they may be. These studies do of course support their claim to that shitty little country. My reasons for this are not mainly those of the learned historian and scientist, but rather of the pragmatist who wants somewhere to put this annoying bunch, in addition to having their branch of the genetic tree farther removed from us Real Europeans (or Whites, if you prefer).

Agreed. There is no reason, though, to completely disallow Khazar influence on todays' Ashkenazim. I suspect that large numbers of diaspora Jews, actual Sephardim, found the Khazar country receptive. Just as they used group tactics to encroach upon and influence the leaders of Babylon, Egypt, Rome, London, Berlin , Washington, etc, so they are said to have done in Khazaria.
The Jew's version states that the Khan (?), or ruler wanted to choose a state religion from the three biggies locally available. He separately asked representatives of all three to name the next best. Both the Muslim and the Christian chose Judaism and the Jew refused to choose. Thus Judaism was chosen.
Again, knowing the Jewish modus op, I can see it. The tale above may be mythic, but it is likely that large numbers of Jews stayed there during one of their rare proselytizing eras and moved on north when Khazaria collapsed, taking converts and mischlings along into Russia, Poland, Germany, the "land of Ashkenaz." Perhaps in waves or in chain-style movement or both. That is what makes them look so different from true full-blood Semites; not that they were "raped by a cossack."
On a related note; of the ten tribes that made up the Magyars (today's Hungarians), three were Cumans, an off-shoot sub-tribe of the Khazars. Maybe the Jew-free nationalist remnant. Who knows.
