Nigerian burns £1.2m in bizarre ritual

A Nigerian official obsessed with witchcraft burned £1.2 million of stolen public money and smeared the ashes over his naked body in a bizarre ritual, police said.

Sam Edem, chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission, is accused of stealing a total of £3.4 million in public money to pay a witchdoctor to cast "juju" spells to secure business contracts and to kill a powerful rival at work.

Part of the black magic reportedly involved Mr Edem burning £1.2 million in cash and then smearing the ashes over his naked body in a cemetery in the middle of the night in a "fortification" ritual.

Mr Edem, who denies the allegations, has been formally charged with theft and criminal conspiracy at the High Court in the capital, Abuja.

He initiated the police investigation himself when he complained that the self-proclaimed sorcerer, Perekabowei Ogah, had tried to swindle him out of millions of pounds and was acting on behalf of political rivals.

But detectives became suspicious when Mr Edem allegedly could not account for how he earned the money in the first place. His lawyers said it was donated by well-wishers to fund an election attempt.

"We believe that this is money from the Nigerian government, money that should have been used to develop the Niger Delta," said Ali Amodu, the police commissioner in Abuja.

The Niger Delta Development Commission was set up to channel money that the federal government earns from crude oil sales back to the millions who live in poverty in the country's oil-producing region.

Despite initial support from the public, its reputation was quickly tarnished by persistent reports that it achieved little and that senior members of staff were stealing funds.

The area has been plagued by an increasingly violent rebellion spearheaded by militants who say they are fighting for a greater share of oil wealth to the Delta.

But many of the armed gangs are little more than criminals extorting money through kidnappings, often with the tacit support of local politicians, it has been claimed.

In April 2002, 25-year-old Singleton murdered Tynisha Ysais in her apartment while under the influence of PCP. Her boyfriend Thomas Moore testified that he and Singleton spent the evening prior to the murder smoking PCP, also known as "angel dust."

The victim was found in her apartment by her friend Alisa Allen. Her chest had been torn open and a three-inch blade was found broken off in her shoulder blade. Teeth marks were found on her face and lungs, which had been torn from her chest. Eyewitnesses reported that when Singleton was picked up by police, he was naked in the middle of the street, covered in blood and staring at the sky. A medical examination performed shortly after his capture found human flesh in his stomach which was not his own. [2]

Carla Mendez Found Guilty in Witchcraft Murder Trial

A downtown Los Angeles jury found 22-year-old Carla Mendez guilty of second-degree murder yesterday. Mendez was accused of killing a local snow-cone vendor who allegedly put an evil spell on her female lover Maria Gomez. Gomez was found guilty of first-degree murder in August of 2007.

Los Angeles Police Department Northeast Detectives found 43-year-old Norberto Castro’s battered body next to a Jetta on Allesandro Street in Silver Lake on July 13, 2005. Castro, a happy go lucky snow-cone vendor who pushed a cart around his Melrose Avenue neighborhood, was rushed to the hospital but died of his injuries soon afterwards.

According to the prosecution’s key witness, Sogui Godinez, Gomez concocted a sinister plan to kill the Mexican immigrant after consulting a bruja — a Mexican witch doctor operating out of a botanica within the city's sprawling immigrant community. Gomez decided Castro had cast a spell on her as punishment for spurning his advances. Swept up in her eerie beliefs, Gomez decided her only escape was to murder Castro.

Gomez ultimately tricked Castro into drinking paint thinner and nail-polish remover, then joined Mendez in bashing his head in with rocks.

The entire tragedy, according to court papers, was driven by Gomez' belief in love spells and witchcraft, practiced underground in many poor Latino neighborhoods.

On that summer night, Castro joined Gomez, Mendez and a friend in a late-night trip to Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro, where, according to Godinez, Castro accepted a beer from Gomez and guzzled it — not realizing Gomez had spiked it with nail-polish remover and paint thinner.

Castro was barely conscious when they shoved him into the car and drove back into Los Angeles. As they drove, Gomez began striking Castro with a beer bottle and shouting, “You disgust me…You are ugly.”

Cops said that Mendez admitted to striking Castro over the head with a beer bottle after he lunged towards Gomez’ throat. The beating began after Castro insulted the women, and performed witchcraft on Gomez, according to Mendez.

“[Castro] was stupid for not defending himself,” Mendez said to the cops during an interview.

They eventually parked Gomez’ Jetta on Allesandro Way. According to Godinez, Gomez and Mendez tried to back the car over Castro — but the car wouldn't start. Instead, they bashed in his skull with two rocks that weighed over 16 pounds, and fled.

Mendez told cops that she didn’t know why Castro died. LAPD detective Luis Rivera suggested that it was because of the beating he endured at her hands. “She was laughing and said, ‘I don’t want to talk about those stories.’”

Rivera, who earlier this week, said Mendez later laughed, and said: “I should have used gloves…next time.”

Last week, Mendez’ attorney Norman Kallen said Mendez and Gomez came from “humble beginnings” and arrived in Los Angeles without “the help of legal entry.”

Gomez and Mendez had a history of “expecting a curse on them,” he said.

“My client is an individual who subscribes to the possibility [that] if a hex is placed on them those individuals are subject to be victimized,” he said, and because of Mendez’ love for Gomez, “she felt Gomez was being threatened by this guy.”

With fingerprint evidence placing Gomez inside the bloodied Jetta, she was arrested during a six-hour stakeout on a South L.A. street in September of 2005. Mendez eluded the law for five more months, and was picked up by the LAPD's fugitive task force on February 23, 2006, visiting a friend in South L.A.

A man accused of killing a newborn baby because the child was interrupting his video game has pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Rene Edward Barrios entered his plea Thursday and will be sentenced to somewhere between 10.5 and 21 years in prison on Sept. 30 by Pima County Superior Court Judge Richard Fields.Barrios, 26, was living with Jaden Encinas’ mother on Oct. 26, 2007, when she left their apartment to run errands.She told police her 18-day-old baby was sleeping on their bed when she left.Prosecutors allege that when the child started to cry, Barrios paused his video game, went into the bedroom and shook the baby and hit him in the head.

Barrios left the baby comatose on the bed and spent the next five to 10 minutes finishing his game, authorities said.

Report: Congo soccer riot over 'witchcraft' leaves 11 dead

KINSHASA , Congo -- At least 11 people were killed in a stadium riot in eastern Congo after a soccer player tried to use witchcraft to win a local match, U.N.-backed Radio Okapi reported on Monday.

Nyuki club was losing to local rivals Socozaki on Sunday when Nyuki's goalkeeper advanced up the field and tried to use "fetishist" spells to turn the tide of the match, Okapi said, without giving more details.

When a police commander tried to break up an ensuing brawl between rival players, members of the crowd pelted him with rocks, the radio added.

Police fired teargas in response, causing a stampede to the exits in which 11 people were killed and several injured, Okapi said.

As elsewhere in Africa, many Congolese hold traditional animist beliefs and use spells, fetishes and charms to practise witchcraft, often combined with other religions like Christianity or Islam.

Sunday's riot happened in Butembo, in North Kivu province, where fighting between the army and rebels has raged on despite the official end of a 1998-2003 war that has killed an estimated 5.4 million people through violence, hunger and disease.

Diversity Is Strength! It’s Also… Witchcraft, Imported By Immigration. (And, Yes, From Obama’s Kenya Too)

Witch doctor?

In the wide, wide world of diversity, there's nothing quite as pungent as witchcraft. In many ways it is the gold standard of primitive anti-civilization belief systems—because it takes the human yearning for meaning and plops out credos that are reason-free and often violence-prone.

And because witchcraft and superstition represent such a complete refutation of multiculturalism—the ideology that all cultures are morally equal—there is little discussion in the polite liberal press when monstrous crimes result. The tone is one of proper shock, e.g.: isn't it terrible these things still go on in the world? Yet immigration in large numbers from these same societies is accepted with no question.

Now that our President-elect is the son of a Kenyan national, it’s especially interesting to observe how strongly Africans cling to their belief in witchcraft. National Public Radio remarked recently that "In much of Africa, people believe in some form of witchcraft".['Witch' Burnings Haunt Kenyan Tribe, by Gwen Thompkins, October 22, 2008] (Nevertheless, NPR’s reporting of African immigrants in the US has been largely positive).

If President Obama succeeds in arranging more immigration from Africa, Americans can expect a wide assortment of superstitious behavior that we would find objectionable, to say the least.

If witchcraft only included mildly offbeat practices like casting spells and mixing up herbal concoctions, it might not matter much. But those primitive beliefs can lead to deadly violence.

In Tanzania, at least 30 albinos have been murdered in the last year because of witchcraft. Their body parts are much desired for sorcery rituals and bring a high price. There is a cross-border trade with Burundi where albinos, including children, are chased down, killed and dismembered. One man was pursued by four armed men and had to hide in the forest for two days.

The purchasers may place a body part near a gold mine to bring the metal to the surface or on a hook as fish bait.

"The killers sell body parts such as arms, legs, hair, skin and genitals, according to police and albino groups.

“Those involved in witchcraft, especially in mining and fishing industries, believe these will enrich them, President Kikwete said last month, calling it a 'stupid belief.'

Local media have reported several incidents of victims left to bleed to death.

'They are cutting us up like chickens,' Msembo said, while pointing to a picture on a wall in her cramped office of a limbless body with the skin on its face peeled off from an incident in 2007." [African albinos killed for body parts, By George Obulutsa, Reuters, November 3, 2008]

As a result, the 200,000 Tanzanian albinos are terrorized and angry that their corpses have become a commodity. In one recent case, a 10-year-old girl was killed and mutilated by a gang to sell the parts.

In Angola and Congo, children are accused surprisingly often of being witches, and often expelled from their families. One investigation counted 432 Angolan street children in a single town who had been accused of witchcraft and turned out.

"The notion of child witches is not new here. It is a common belief in Angola's dominant Bantu culture that witches can communicate with the world of the dead and usurp or ‘eat’ the life force of others, bringing their victims misfortune, illness and death. Adult witches are said to bewitch children by giving them food, then forcing them to reciprocate by sacrificing a family member. [...]

“Angola's government has campaigned since 2000 to dispel notions about child witches, Ms. Silva said, but progress comes slowly. 'We cannot change the belief that witches exist,' she said. Witchcraft pops up in diverse ways that we westerners can scarcely imagine.

For example, it was reported in September that accusations of sorcery set off a soccer riot in eastern Congo causing the deaths of 13 people, most of whom were children and teens. [Witchcraft rumor sparks riot at Congo soccer game, AP, September 15, 2008] The blow-up began when one player was suspected of throwing something into the net of the opposing team, which was thought to be "witchcraft." The result was violence and death.

And here's a situation you don't often see repeated often in Peoria: Lynchings in Congo as penis theft panic hits capital [By Joe Bavier, Reuters, April 23, 2008]. Actually, there were only attempted lynchings, after men became convinced that black magic had been used to disappear their all-important plumbing. (However, 12 accused snatchers were beaten to death by mobs in Ghana a decade ago, Reuters notes.)

Back to Kenya: just last spring eight women and three men, between the ages of 80 and 96, were burned to death for being witches in western Kenya. The Kisli people of that region are said to believe in witchcraft with particular fervor.

Not that Africa is the only place where sorcery is part of the social norm. India also has no shortage of witchcraft activity, despite its pretensions to being a new member of the First World.

Last March, a journalist reported and photographed an accused witch tied to tree while being beaten by her fellow villagers. The alleged witch lived through the violence, but another woman did not survive a similar attack the same month.

A 2006 study found that some 200 people had been killed in the state of Assam in northern India during the previous five years for allegedly practicing witchcraft.

And here's a story of witchcraft hysteria from India that features ugly details:

"The tea plantation worker and his four children had been blamed for causing a disease which killed two other workers and made many unwell in Assam state.

“About 200 villagers tried and sentenced the family in an unofficial court, then publicly beheaded them with machetes.

“They then marched to a police station with the heads, chanting slogans denouncing witchcraft and black magic." [Indian 'witchcraft' family killed, BBC, March 19, 2006]

The Times of India reported a medieval-style test recently: Branded witch, tribal woman forced to dip hands in hot oil [October 10, 2008]. Actually, it was boiling oil:

"A group of villagers, including the panchayat members (Patels), then took the woman to a deserted location and forced her to pick a silver coin from a vessel containing boiling oil. The woman suffered severe burns on both her hands and she fell unconscious. However, this did not deter the villagers and they thrashed her badly with hot iron rods due to which she received head injuries. She was then forcibly taken to the Gharasiyas' house and told to ward-off the miseries from the family by chanting magic words. "

Long-time VDARE.COM readers know that immigrants don't leave primitive beliefs behind just because they are relocating to the First World. Foreign newcomers bring their whole cultural package—sometimes including the very worst that humanity has to offer.

One disturbing case was the murder of eight-year-old Victoria Climbie, an African child living in Britain. Her death was caused by ongoing physical abuse connected to a belief in witchcraft on the part of her guardians. They tortured and killed her at least to some degree because they believed her to be possessed.

Worse, her case was only the tip of the iceberg.

"An official inquiry into the abuse of African children branded as witches is expected to conclude that there have been at least 50 such cases over five years in London alone.

The investigation is expected to find that cases of sorcery-related abuse are now spreading outside the capital to areas such as Liverpool, Newcastle and parts of Yorkshire—although they remain confined to only a minority of Africans in Britain.

The abuse of the children has ranged from shouting to beating, starving, slashing with knives and razors and, in at least one case, murder." ["Witch child" abuse spreads in Britain, By Jack Grimston Sunday Times, June 25, 2006]

Another shocking murder was "Adam," an unidentified child whose headless torso was found in the Thames in September 2001. The African boy was believed to be between four and six years old and had swallowed a potion containing bone fragments before he died. Investigators concluded that the boy was killed in a ritual murder as a part of African witchcraft. No-one was ever arrested.

After more investigation of missing children in Britain, authorities determined that some 300 black boys aged 4-7 were unaccounted for, leading to fears of widespread child sacrifice. But child protective agencies do not track the many foreign children sent to live in Britain under the care of persons who are not the parents. So the extent of abuse is not really known.

More complicating is the presence of ostensibly Christian churches, populated with African immigrants, which commonly practice exorcisms. ['Exorcisms are part of our culture', By Cindi John BBC News, June 3, 2005]In particular, Congolese and Angolan preachers accept the existence of evil spirits, curses and demonic possession, and weave that belief into their ministries. In some cases, pastors have crossed the line into child abuse in their activities to drive out evil spirits. Social turmoil has been an unfortunate byproduct, with ethnic groups accusing police of racism.

Sadly, America has not escaped from the diversity of African churches, as even the New York Times has reported.

In Washington, DC, the Spiritual Warfare ministry does battle against the witches and devils that parishioners regard as the source of life's difficulties.

Founded by a Congolese couple, the congregation fights the effects of sorcery as members sing, pray, kick and shadowbox against demons. Parishioners slice the air with their arms to cut the ties which evil has on them. They meet late at night because they believe that is when the forces of evil are most active. So it goes in the increasingly borderless world that elites are promoting, in opposition to our old-fashioned nations with unitary cultures.

The advantages of One-Worldism are much-touted. We hear much less about the darker side of human nature with its many dark corners of fear and ignorance.

The social progress we have made in America is threatened by the deluge of immigrants whose customs are incompatible with our values. We have a system of government and society which we run by principles based on reason, not the reading of entrails. And we would like to keep depending on rationality.

Remember this when the new President starts pressing for more African immigration and influence.

Albino Africans live in fear after witch-doctor butchery

A series of horrific murders of albinos in Tanzania has shocked the nation. As children are hacked to death for their body parts, believed to bring good luck, the authorities are failing to stop a trade in organs that relies on superstition and greed

The Tanzanian MP recounts the appalling story in a tone of sadness and horror. A woman named Salma had been told by her family to dress her baby entirely in black and to lay the little girl in a hut, alone. 'The mother didn't understand, but she obeyed the elders,' said Al-Shaymaa Kwegyir.

'Some hours later, unknown men arrived and went straight to the hut. They used a machete to cut off the child's legs. Then they slit her throat and poured the blood into a pot and drank it.'

Amid a spate of at least 29 murders of albinos in Tanzania, Kwegyir, herself an albino, has become one of the country's most prominent political campaigners on the issue. She cited evidence that killers acting for witch doctors are turning to cannibalism alongside their quest for lucrative body parts as magic charms.

Buyers from as far away as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Kenya and Uganda believe the legs, genitals, eyes and hair of people with albinism can help them achieve instant wealth. The youngest victim so far was seven months old.

Kwegyir, 48, had met Salma in her village in the Mwanga district near Kilimanjaro. 'It is the first cannibalistic case, but in other respects it is a classic example. Someone in the extended family who has links with a witch doctor will help set up the abduction or killing. These murders are inspired by ignorance and greed. An albino hand is selling for two million shillings (£1,200),' she said.

Despite government moves to protect albinos - who have an inherited gene disorder which results in a lack of pigmentation and can produce near-blindness - the targeted murders, which were first reported a year ago, are continuing. 'Two weeks pass and we think it's getting better, then another one happens,' said Kwegyir, who was appointed to parliament in April by President Jakaya Kikwete in order to combat prejudice.

The murders are the result of seemingly conflicting beliefs spread by witch doctors, who are still consulted by many of Tanzania's 40 million-strong population, that albinos are either cursed or have supernatural properties. Some fishermen believe that, if they weave the red hair from an albino into their nets, fish will be attracted by the golden glimmer. Miners for gold, rubies and tanzanite are reported to pay large sums for juju (magic) amulets, which they wear around their necks or strapped to their arms and which are made up with a potion mixed from albino body parts. Others are said to bury the bones of albinos in the ground they are digging.

A relative haven of safety for Tanzania's albinos is the small park outside the single-storey wards of Dar es Salaam's Cancer Institute. In alleys leading between the wards, albinos with bandages on their heads and feet, or slings on their arms, wait for check-ups.

They have russet-coloured hair and milky-white skin, but their facial features are African. Many are covered in welts, scabs and burns. Cancer is their greatest killer and, whereas albinos in developed countries can hope to live until normal old age, Africans who have the condition rarely survive beyond the age of 40.

Zihada Msembo said her greatest enemy used to be the sun. Now she walks in fear wherever she goes. 'In the streets you hear people plotting. They say "look at the zeru [ghost]. We can get him". We are terrified to go outside or to get into our beds at night.'

The hospital's rundown gatehouse is the home of the Tanzanian Albino Society. Its chairman, Ernest Kimaya, 42, said the organisation ran on an annual government grant which he summarised as 'equal to a week's tea budget at State House'. Albinos need skin creams, spectacles and large-print books, but they receive no funding for these. Kimaya wears glasses but at his computer his nose is less than 10cm from the screen.

He said Tanzanian albinos had always faced discrimination in schools or in the workplace. 'People believe a woman who has an albino child has been cursed and that the whole family will now suffer bad luck. In olden days midwives killed the babies at birth but now that there are health centres, albino babies do survive.'

Kimaya's society, probably Africa's oldest albino association, set up in 1980, feels powerless in the face of the attacks. 'The people who are killing us are witch doctors or agents for them. What is happening is mad and horrible,' Kimaya said.

Kimaya said the superstition of money-making had always existed but used to be confined to remote areas. Tanzania's recent minerals boom, which has attracted thousands of people to try their luck in small-scale mining, may have contributed to the spread of the belief. Murders are now also reported in neighbouring countries and Kikwete has asked other heads of state in the Southern African Development Community to act to stamp out the killings.

Last week the Daily News reported the arrest of a 35-year-old fisherman at Lake Tanganyika who had allegedly attempted to sell his 24-year-old albino wife to two businessmen from the Democratic Republic of Congo for 3.6m shillings (about £2,000). Another report told of a man caught at the border carrying a bag containing a baby's head. He told police that a Tanzanian witch doctor had offered to pay him according to the weight of the head.

More than 170 people, most of them witch doctors, have been arrested in Tanzania this year; 53 are in custody, but Kimaya wants firmer, swifter action. 'We need money to pay a lawyer. The government has ordered the police to carry out a census of albinos, so that we know how many of us there are,' he said.

'They have also been instructed to work with villagers to protect us and to escort albino children to school. It is a big step forward, but we urgently need prosecutions to begin so that Tanzanians hear of this injustice,' added Kimaya, who is one of three albino siblings out of seven children in his family. He is married to a black woman and their four children are black.

Even though albinism exists in Europe and North America, where it affects one in 20,000 people, it is far more widespread in Africa. One of the continent's music stars, Salif Keita from Mali, is an albino. One study has put the Tanzanian ratio at one in 4,000 people. Kimaya believes there are 370,000 albinos in Tanzania. Some researchers have suggested that the source of the albino gene can be traced to the east coast of Africa.

Despite government efforts and growing pressure from abroad, including a motion condemning the events in Tanzania in September in the European Parliament, the country's albinos are still living in fear.

Kwegyir was an activist for the ruling party and an information officer at Dar es Salaam airport before becoming an MP. She said there was an urgent need for the international community to support albinos: 'If we can have skin creams, books and spectacles, this will help us to lead more normal lives and to come out of the shadows and combat prejudice.'

For the moment the safety of albinos is her prime concern. 'On 19 October we staged a demonstration in Dar es Salaam to raise awareness of our situation. Many people were brave and came out. But that same evening one of the demonstrators was followed home, grabbed, and the assailants tried to hack off one of her arms. This was left hanging and later had to be amputated. The attackers cut off the other arm and ran away.

'Now she is living in constant terror because she won't be able to fight back if they come after her a second time.'

If he could speak, he'd likely claim he was being used as a scapegoat, but alas, a goat who is being held on suspicion of attempted armed robbery in Nigeria will have a hard time mounting his own defence.

The goat was turned over to police by vigilantes, who claim the person responsible for trying to steal a Mazda 323 used black magic to turn himself into a goat.

Kwara state police spokesperson Tunde Mohammed said an angry group of citizens chased two hoodlums who were attempting to rob a car. They told police that one apparently got away, but the other transformed into the animal currently being held.

Mohammed admits he would like to see more proof, and less hoof, telling reporters that he can't base his information on something mystical. But the goat is being held until they can clear things up.

LONDON NHS chiefs were today criticised for withholding a damning report into the care of killer Peter Bryan, who cannibalised one of his victims.

Bryan was jailed for "the rest of his natural life" in 2005 after admitting killing two men while receiving treatment for schizophrenia. The mental patient was on release from Newham Centre for Mental Health when he ate the brains of friend Brian Cherry.

He went on to kill fellow patient Richard Loudwell in Broadmoor after being remanded there in 2004.

The independent investigation into blunders by staff at East London and City Mental Health Trust was to be released today. But the inquiry report will not be published until May because health bosses say they want to protect the relatives of victims. NHS London said it did not want the report to coincide with the anniversary of any of the killings.

But mental health campaigners called for it to be published immediately so that lessons could be learned. Charity Sane said delay would cause further distress to the victims' families. Chief executive Marjorie Wallace said: "We are surprised that what should be a transparent, public, independent inquiry should apparently be delayed for no given reason, raising concerns about how disturbing the findings may be."

The judge who jailed Bryan, now 39, described him as "uniquely dangerous". The mental patient from Forest Gate had spent time in a secure hospital after killing his first victim, 20-year-old shop assistant Nisha Sheth, in 1993.

But he was released in 2001 after applying to a mental health review tribunal. Bryan was allowed to live as a "care in the community" outpatient but was taken back onto a ward at Newham Centre for Mental Health.

It was there he was assessed by social worker Roland Silcott who wrote to the Home Office saying he was "no longer a danger". In February 2004, Bryan was told he could have as much leave as he wanted just hours before he went to Mr Cherry's flat and killed him.

Uganda: Man Lynched Over Cannibalism

Kampala — Residents of Kyenjojo district last Wednesday lynched a man suspected of practicing cannibalism.

The district Police commander, George Sabiiti, identified the deceased as James Tibihikirira from Nyabugorogoro. The residents also accused Tibihikirira of practicing witchcraft, leading to the death of over 15 people.

Before his death, Tibihikirira was reportedly first attacked by his relatives last week. He was saved by the LCI chairman, Swithen Musongola, who called the Police.

Tibihikirira was detained at Kyenjojo Police Station but escaped from Police custody on April 15, and went to his home where he was killed. His body was burnt and house set on fire.

A 17-year-old Terrytown man was arrested on charges of aggravated rape and first-degree murder of an 8-month-old child Saturday afternoon, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office said.

Arnold T. Ross, of 136 Friedrichs Road in Terrytown, was booked into the Jefferson Parish Correctional Facility. No bond is available on the first-degree murder charge.

Ross was arrested after officers responded to a call of an unresponsive infant at 1656 Gary Court, Apt. B, near Gretna.

The infant, Da-Von Lonzo, was taken to Ochsner Westbank where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, according to a release issued by Col. John Fortunato, a spokesman for the sheriff's office.

The death was initially unclassified, but the Jefferson Parish coroner's office later reported it as a homicide after an autopsy of the child's body revealed multiple fractures consistent with a beating and tears in the anus.

Ross, who said he was the boyfriend of the infant's mother, initially told detectives that the baby fell down the stairs while he was babysitting, Fortunato said. But a neighbor reported hearing loud noises coming from the apartment, and investigators noted inconsistencies in Ross's account.

Ross later admitted that he beat the infant repeatedly when he would not stop crying, Fortunato said. When the child began to defecate on himself, Ross said he tried to clean it up, causing the tears, according to the release.

Ross has a record of previous arrests for possession of crack cocaine and marijuana, obscenity, battery on a correctional officer, three counts of battery on a teacher, three counts of theft, illegal carrying of a weapon and assault.

A teenage girl testified yesterday that her mother and a male family friend urged her to have sex with him when she was 9 years old in an effort to lift a curse on the family.

"This was something I had to do to help the people I was close to," the 16-year-old told a Common Pleas jury yesterday. "The way I understood was that if I didn't do this, bad things were gonna happen."

Hector Ayala, 59, is charged with rape of a child and aggravated indecent assault in what allegedly began as what he said was a Santeria ritual and continued for years, eventually involving two of the girl's friends.

The girl's mother, whose name is being withheld to protect her daughter's identity, is charged with conspiracy, sexual assault and related offenses for allegedly persuading her daughter and being present during several assaults.

Under questioning from Assistant District Attorney Leslie Gomez, the girl said that she was 9 when her mother told her that she had the power to lift a curse on the family by allowing Ayala to have oral sex with her.

The girl said that the notion of a curse seemed real at the time; her mother had just lost her job and her mother's boyfriend recently had been sent to prison.

She said Ayala performed oral sex on her every day after school for a week, while her mother lay in bed next to her, holding her hand.

The girl said that her mother did not know that the sexual contact with Ayala did not end there.

Ayala told her that they needed to "finish the job," which required vaginal intercourse, the girl said.

The sex acts, which continued until she was 15, became so frequent that the two devised a code to describe the activity, she said.

Eventually, three of her friends were also pushed into sex with Ayala, who similarly misled the girls with talk of curses and impending misfortune, she said.

Ayala is charged in his alleged acts with two of those girls, who also are underage.

In his opening statement, Michael Engle, the mother's attorney, said that his client never conspired with Ayala and that the evidence against her is insufficient.

Ayala's attorney, Michael Medway, said that prosecutors have no objective evidence against his client. He also pointed to a letter the girl had written after the allegations became public, in which she claims to have lied about the entire ordeal.

Gomez said that the girl was just scared and saw the letter as a way to get her old life back.

Botched circumcisions leave 31 dead in S.Africa

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) – Thirty-one teenage boys have died from complications after botched traditional circumcision rites in South Africa's rural Eastern Cape region, officials said on Friday.

"Since the beginning of June, two deaths are being recorded almost every day," regional health spokesman Sizwe Kupelo told AFP.

"This is a grim situation that we deal with every year, the health department has rescued hundreds of boys from schools run by unscrupulous surgeons," he said.

Health authorities say the main causes of death which have been concentrated in the rural Transkei area are dehydration, hypothermia and excessive bleeding and that most boys only seek medical attention when it is too late.

Traditional circumcision is a rite of passage practised by the region's Xhosa clan, where boys from the age of 18 are banished to the bush for about a month and taught social values.

The bi-annual event culminates in a circumcision ritual which is performed without any anaesthetic, using traditional surgical tools.

Kupelo said the number of deaths had been slowly declining over the past five years since the health authorities started clamping down on illegal schools.

"Boys are still dying, some seasons we experience a surge, sometimes the numbers are lower," Kupelo said.

The 2008 winter season saw 24 deaths with some 535 initiates being admitted to hospitals with injuries and suffering from hypothermia.

"This tradition is meant to be like a graduation ceremony from boyhood to manhood, but illegal schools are admitting boys as young as 13 years," said Kupelo.

Deaths continue to plague this age-old tradition despite the passing of a Circumcision Act in 2001 which is aimed at regulating the practice.

Last month, a boy was admitted to hospital with a nearly severed rotting penis, after being cut by an untrained traditional surgeon.

Body identified in Stamford grave theft

STAMFORD -- The identity of the 2-year-old child whose body was stolen from a Stamford grave and found in a New Jersey river has been confirmed as Imani Joyner.

Stamford Town Clerk Donna Loglisci said she signed disinterment papers permitting authorities to exhume Joyner's coffin Monday in Woodland Cemetery in the city's South End.

Joyner died in April 2007 and was born in 2004 with semilobar holoprosencephaly, a condition that kept her brain from developing fully. It affects one in 5,000 to 10,000 live births. She wasn't expected to live; the condition causes babies to die before birth or shortly after.

Joyner survived until she was 2 and a half. Doctors called her a miracle baby.

The disinterment permit signed by Loglisci was handed over to police in Clifton, N.J., where the body was found this weekend.

A Stamford police captain said evidence found at the crime scenes in Woodland Cemetery in Stamford and New Jersey point toward some kind of ritual. He would not say what the evidence was.

"When we say ritualistic, we're looking at an off-shoot of Santeria and Palo Mayombe," Capt. Richard Conklin said, citing two syncretic religions originated among Caribbean descendants of Africans who brought the beliefs from their home continent to the West Indies.

Conklin said the child being dubbed as a "miracle baby" may have led some to believe it had mystical powers.

Joyner died from pneumonia on April 22, 2007 in Branford at a Hospice residence, her death records and obituary show. She had pneumonia for 10 days.

Two men fishing in the Passaic River on Sunday afternoon in Clifton, N.J., found the body of 2-year-old girl in a garbage bag at the shoreline, police said. An investigation led authorities to the grave of Joyner, who was buried in Woodland Cemetery in 2007.

Authorities exhumed the grave on Monday and found an empty coffin that looked broken into. The ground around the grave, however, was not disturbed, and that let police to believe the theft of the body was not recent.

Phone messages left with relatives of Joyner's parents have not been returned.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A man accused of sexually assaulting and killing his girlfriend’s toddler made an initial court appearance in Las Vegas on felony charges of murder and sexual assault with a minor.

William Marshall said Tuesday he understood the charges against him, and Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Nancy Oesterle scheduled a preliminary hearing Oct. 23. The judge set a bail hearing for Aug. 12.

The 37-year-old Marshall was arrested June 13 in Tempe, Ariz.

He is accused of sexually assaulting and killing his girlfriend’s 21-month-old daughter, Shia Travis. Her body was found June 10 in an apartment complex trash bin in Las Vegas.

The girl’s 20-year-old mother, Darrean Williams, has not been charged in the case.

A Conway, S.C., woman who had video surveillance of a man having sexual intercourse with one of her horses said she found the suspect behind her barn Monday night and pointed a shotgun at his head until police arrived and arrested him.

Rodell Vereen, 50, of Longs, is charged with buggery and trespassing after Barbara Kenley, who owns Lazy B Stables on Coates Road in the Wampee section of Horry County, told officers she had video of the suspect having sex with a horse then wanted to catch him at her barn.

``That stable was my getaway, my stress relief,'' said Kenley, who has owned the stable for 20 years. ``Everybody has a place they like to go to get away. Now it is totally destroyed. It is the only thing I have in life.''

A family member said Wednesday that Vereen was diagnosed with a "mental disease'' more than 10 years ago.

``He's supposed to be on medication but I don't believe he's been taking it,'' said Beulah Vereen, also a neighbor. "He's not a violent man, I know.''

It is the second time Vereen, who works for a landscaping company, has been charged with having sex with a horse at Lazy B Stables. Vereen pleaded guilty to buggery on July 21, 2008 and was sentenced to three years probation, ordered to undergo mental health counseling, and told not to go near Lazy B Stables after he was caught having sex with a horse on Thanksgiving Day of 2007, according to the 15th Judicial Circuit.

Vereen has also been registered as a sex offender since pleading to the buggery charge last year, according to the State Law Enforcement Division.

"I have a false sense of security right now,'' Kenley said. ``When they arrested him before I thought that was the end of it. Now all of my insecurities are back. I can't go out there at certain times because I am afraid.''

Vereen will have a probation hearing at 9 a.m. Monday at J. Reuben Long Detention Center in Conway, according to Richard Laskill, a senior agent for the S.C. Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services.

A judge will likely determine if Vereen will serve the remainder of his three-year suspended sentence for the 2007 buggery charge.

"Hopefully he won't get out,'' Kenley said. "My goal is to get him away from me and my property.''

Kenley, who lives four miles away from the stable, said she can't afford a security system for the stables. She said she spent several hundred dollars on the video surveillance system that was used to help identify Vereen.

"In 20 years I've never had a problem like this,'' Kenley said. ``I never knew people did such a thing.''

Kenley said Vereen was having sex with a 21-year-old horse named Sugar. Kenley said the horse is being treated for infections related to the incidents.

Kenley told officers she had video of Vereen ``having relations'' with one of her horses on July 19, according to a police report. ``I had given police surveillance video before and they weren't able to identify him,'' Kenley said. ``And I wanted to catch him firsthand. It was just a matter of time before I caught him.''

On Monday night, Kenley said she went to check on the horses and saw an unknown vehicle parked near her property.

Kenley found Vereen behind a barn where the horses are kept and pointed a shotgun at him. Kenley called police on her cell phone and waited for officers to arrive.

"He was very subdued,'' Kenley said. ``He was like ... cold. He may have been in shock.''

Kenley said she asked Vereen what he was doing at the barn and that he said he was looking for a bathroom.

"I told him he was full of crap,'' Kenley said. "He apologized and said he didn't mean to hurt me.''

Vereen admitted to officers that he did have "relations'' with a horse on July 19, the report shows. Officers reported that they viewed a video showing the suspect having intercourse with a horse.

“I placed a goat's horn into the stomach of my elder sister to prevent her from having children," Olivia, 19, and a self-proclaimed witch, now exorcised, told a large congregation at the Ebenezer Healing Church at Kasoa, in the Central Region last week.

She had been sent to the church by her relatives after they heard about Prophet Michael Osei, founder and leader of the church and his miraculous encounters with witches and wizards.

They had the conviction that the man of God could help their child to get rid of her witchcraft.

Olivia had told her parents (the father and a step-mother) that she was forced to send her mother (now deceased) to a witches camp where she was slaughtered for a feast.

"They gave my mother's heart to me to eat and our queen witch feasted on my mother's head as our culture demands," she told the stunned congregation.

Earlier, Olivia had confessed that she was given the witchcraft spirit by her paternal grandmother at the age of five.

"I personally did not like the witchcraft and I fell sick often, so l told my mother about it. She did not believe me and warned me not to mention it again saying that it was not possible.

"Again, I persisted in encouraging my mother to take me to a powerful man of God to exorcise me but she refused to do anything about it until I turned 15, by which time I had become well-versed in witchcraft.

"I became so strong spiritually that once when my mother took me to a pastor in Cote d'ivoire, where we lived, to be exorcised, a strong burst of smoke suddenly came out of my nose and mouth as the pastor faced me, forcing him to fall flat on the ground. He was not strong spiritually to face the witchcraft spirit in me, so we left."

According to Olivia, later and before her mother could decide to take her to see another man of God, the witches ordered her to bring her mother down to the camp to be slaughtered for one of their numerous feasts "since I had been feasting on other witches' meat and had never brought any meat to the camp for a feast."

I felt reluctant to comply with their order and so I refused to go to the camp for two weeks but they attacked me at home spiritually one night and beat me up mercilessly until I became very weak. Before they left, they threatened to kill me if I refused to bring my mother to the camp within some days.

"Their spiritual assault on me manifested physically the next day. When my mother saw the marks on my body, she demanded to know what had happened but I never told her the truth. She then took me to the hospital where I was treated and discharged.

"Because of their threat to kill me, which I knew they could do, I had no option but to spiritually take my mother to the camp the following day to be slaughtered."

She said after her mother's death, she decided to prevent her elder sister from having children.

"I turned my left hand into a knife spiritually, opened her womb and placed a goat's horn in there to prevent her seeds from growing. It has been in there for the last 10 years during which my sister has gone all lengths to find a solution to her barrenness without success wasting a lot of time and money in the processes."

The goat's horn was invoked spiritually by Prophet Osei and Olivia's sister vomited it out in the presence of the congregation after she (Olivia) was ordered into the bush to pluck some leaves which the prophet used to induce the vomiting.

According to Olivia, if her sister had gone for an operation in her quest for a baby, she would have died on the operating table.

"Also I had no reason to place a cowry in the stomach of my grandmother but I did, resulting in her constant stomach troubles which wasted her money when she went round hospitals and herbal centres looking for a cure." The old lady vomited the cowry in the presence of the congregation after the prophet commanded it out.

Olivia, who does not know how to drive a vehicle physically, said as a witch, she was a driver at the camp and drove the witches to wherever she was directed to drive them to.

Asked where they got their vehicles from to drive around spiritually, she said they could use anybody's vehicle spiritually.

"The car may be seen to have been parked but we take it away spiritually," she said.

She added that their careless nocturnal driving sometimes damaged some of the vehicles they took away spiritually, giving the owners a hell of trouble the following day.

A suspected cannibal was arrested in Richards Bay's Esikhawini township last night after police found body parts cooking in a pot at a nearby reserve. MAPUTO (AFP) – Two young men accused of having sex with a goat in central Mozambique are facing criminal charges, and the goat's owner is demanding they make traditional wedding arrangements, state media said Friday.

The young men, whose names and ages were not released, were caught in the act by police and arrested outside the rural town of Mbucuta in central Mozambique, said the website of the state broadcaster.

"One of the young men was naked and holding the goat's head, and the other was having sex with the animal," witness Mario Creva told Radio Mozambique.

District prosecutor Leonides Mapasse said the two will face trial for simple larceny.

The goat's owner may also file a civil suit against them, he said.

The practice of human sacrifice is on the rise in Uganda, as measured by ritual killings where body parts, often facial features or genitals, are cut off for use in ceremonies. The number of people killed in ritual murders last year rose to a new high of at least 15 children and 14 adults, up from just three cases in 2007, according to police. The informal count is much higher — 154 suspects were arrested last year and 50 taken to court over ritual killings.

Children in particular are common victims, according to a U.S. State Department report released this month. The U.S. spent $500,000 to train 2,000 Ugandan police last year to investigate offences related to human trafficking, including ritual killings.

Mobile preacher arrested for incest and murder

MOBILE, Ala. - A Mobile man is facing charges of murder, rape, sodomy, and incest. Police believe Anthony Hopkins murdered his wife, and kept her in the freezer putting his family through a reign of terror and sexual abuse. It happened on Rylands Street.

Police say behind the yellow tape lived a family of eight children who've endured years of abuse. Police say their father, Anthony Hopkins; most likely killed his wife, and sexually abused at least one of his kids. But thanks to one brave child, it looks like the nightmare could be over.

Police say inside the brick walls was a family in pain. Living there was a father, a so-called evangelical preacher named Anthony Hopkins. Eight children were also under his roof. Monday night, one of those children paid a visit to the Child Advocacy Center. She arrived with a startling accusation.

"We had a victim present at our offices who complained about an on-going case of sexual abuse that had taken place over many years," said Steve Giardini, with the Child Advocacy Center.

So, investigators searched the home, and what they found was even more shocking.....the frozen body of a woman. They believe she was Hopkins’ wife, Arletha. Police say they found the body in a freezer. It was wrapped in a sheet, and placed in a utility room behind the home.

"We believe it has been there for quite a while. The last known reporting or sighting of her has been three years," said Mobile Police Chief Phillip Garrett.

Itinerant preacher Anthony Jujuan Hopkins killed his wife and buried her in a shallow grave, but dug her up and put her in a home freezer when her bloating body began to crack the ground, police told a Mobile judge Wednesday.

The murderous rampage started after James Larry, a converted Muslim, looked to the sky and didn't see the moon or the sun before dawn Wednesday, a family member says.
"That meant Allah told him to take his family," said the woman, who asked that her name not be printed.

Larry, of Wisconsin, was charged Thursday with murder in the fatal shootings of his wife and three other family members.

A jury sentenced Steffen to death for rape and murder... but Steffen said he never actually raped her. But sperm was found inside Range's body. Steffen's defense attorney painted Range as less-than-virtuous, even though her family insisted she was a virgin and was saving herself for her fiance.

Last Thursday, officials learned the sperm found in Range belonged to Douglas. Douglas was arrested in March on drug trafficking charges. Suspects who face drug charges must automatically give a DNA sample under Ohio law. It was that DNA sample that ended up matching
the sperm found in Range's body.

Douglas worked in the coroner's office from 1976 to 1992. Deters says it appears Douglas took Range's body out of a refrigeration unit and had sex with it. He also says he has reason to believe Douglas had sex with other bodies.

Police say a Camden, N.J., mother apparently decapitated her 2-year-old boy and put his head in the freezer of their home before she fatally stabbed herself.

Chevonne Thomas, 33, called 911 just after midnight to say something had happened to her child and it "sounded like she had done it," said Jason Laughlin, a spokesman for the county prosecutor's office.

Officers found Zahree Thomas' body on the first floor of the Camden home and the boy's head in the freezer, NBCPhiladelphia.com reported.

A Nigerian official obsessed with witchcraft burned £1.2 million of stolen public money and smeared the ashes over his naked body in a bizarre ritual, police said.

Sam Edem, chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission, is accused of stealing a total of £3.4 million in public money to pay a witchdoctor to cast "juju" spells to secure business contracts and to kill a powerful rival at work.

Part of the black magic reportedly involved Mr Edem burning £1.2 million in cash and then smearing the ashes over his naked body in a cemetery in the middle of the night in a "fortification" ritual.

Mr Edem, who denies the allegations, has been formally charged with theft and criminal conspiracy at the High Court in the capital, Abuja.

He initiated the police investigation himself when he complained that the self-proclaimed sorcerer, Perekabowei Ogah, had tried to swindle him out of millions of pounds and was acting on behalf of political rivals.

But detectives became suspicious when Mr Edem allegedly could not account for how he earned the money in the first place. His lawyers said it was donated by well-wishers to fund an election attempt.

"We believe that this is money from the Nigerian government, money that should have been used to develop the Niger Delta," said Ali Amodu, the police commissioner in Abuja.

The Niger Delta Development Commission was set up to channel money that the federal government earns from crude oil sales back to the millions who live in poverty in the country's oil-producing region.

Despite initial support from the public, its reputation was quickly tarnished by persistent reports that it achieved little and that senior members of staff were stealing funds.

The area has been plagued by an increasingly violent rebellion spearheaded by militants who say they are fighting for a greater share of oil wealth to the Delta.

But many of the armed gangs are little more than criminals extorting money through kidnappings, often with the tacit support of local politicians, it has been claimed.

NEW HAVEN — A 45-year-old man is jailed in lieu of $500,000 bail amid allegations he beat, cut and handcuffed his 9-year-old stepdaughter to a radiator over the course of years in what one veteran police sergeant described as “the worst case of child abuse I’ve ever seen.”

The man, Craig Tracy Williams, was arraigned Monday, two days after police found him, his wife and four other children filling up at a Forbes Avenue gas station “apparently getting ready to flee” on the highway while the victim was still in the hospital for her injuries, according to police.

On Tuesday, Assistant Chief Archie Generoso described a house of horrors for the young girl, who told authorities she was beaten because she wasn’t Williams’ biological child. None of the other siblings were abused, the girl told authorities.

When questioned about scars on her torso, the girl explained that “the one on her chest was when her step-father used a little knife. The one on her back was when her step-father used a big knife,” Generoso said. She had multiple other injuries, including a fresh one from where she said he struck her with a baseball bat as she tried to hide under her dresser.

She said the suspect at times handcuffed her by the ankle to a radiator in the junk room off the kitchen as punishment. He would keep her home from school, she said, so teachers wouldn’t see her injuries and at one point she missed an extended period when he broke her hip. He coached her to tell doctors she was injured while riding her bike down a set of stairs.

After beatings, the girl said, Williams would put ice and a special cream on her bruises to make them heal quicker, police said.

Police after the arrest executed a search warrant for the house and seized handcuffs and a machete.

It all started out as what seemed like a routine report of a runaway when Officer Kristen Fitzgerald responded to a home in the 300 block of Edgewood Avenue. She encountered the mother and step-father.

“She needs to learn to take her (expletive) punishment. We are not the type of parent to touch our kids,” Williams said, according to Fitzgerald’s police report.

According to police, that wasn’t true.
Police located the girl with the community’s help in Edgewood Park and noticed new and old injuries to her face. A couple walking a beagle encountered the girl and, liking the dog, she followed them. The couple called police. The girl met up with friends, one of whom said a man had driven past and said the girl’s stepfather was looking for her.

According to police, the “Good Samaritan” then contacted the girl’s mother and the mother asked if she could bring her home. The woman responded that she needed to come to Edgewood Park and speak with police because it looked like the girl had been assaulted and that her face was bruised.

At first, the child claimed that her younger brothers play rough and beat her up, but later, sitting with a paramedic on a shaded bench, opened up and stated that her stepfather has beaten her for years, police said. She said her father told her what to say if ever questioned about injuries.

The girl said her father hits her with a baseball bat, a large flashlight and a black leather belt.

Fitzgerald noted numerous scars on the girl’s body corroborated the girl’s accounts, including numerous scars around her ankle that could have been from tight handcuffs.

Williams was charged with second-degree assault and risk of injury to a minor based on the girl’s injuries and account of the weekend. Police said he could face additional charges by warrant for past abuse.

The mother was not charged over the weekend.

“The numerous scars on (her) body were substantiating the account she was giving of years of abuse. Scars and bruises were all in various states of healing or healed,” Fitzgerald stated.

While her mother has seen some of the abuse, the girl said Williams also took her to the basement to beat her so her mother wouldn’t see, police said.

On Edgewood Avenue Tuesday, neighbors expressed shock and those who knew the family said they never saw signals. One neighbor said he would often see the family together sitting under a tent in the paved back yard.
Another neighbor, Tammy Zollarcoffer, 37, also said she never saw anything unusual.

“That’s terrible. It’s so close,” she said, adding that you never know what happens behind closed doors.

'I want him arrested'

ROCK HILL Tracy, a single mother of five children in Rock Hill, never considered reuniting with the 44-year-old man she broke up with more than 12 years ago, despite claims of a new lifestyle and other “jailhouse talk” he penned in letters to her from prison.

Drugs, followed by his decision to rob a flower shop, tore their one-year romance apart, she said.

“That was it,” said Tracy, who asked that her last name not be used. “I never looked back.”

But it wasn’t “it” for her ex-boyfriend, whom she discovered living in her attic Sunday morning, a year after he helped install new doors on her home after most of it burned in a fire.

Tracy, a nurse, spent Saturday with her children, ages ranging from 3 to 20, and “didn’t see anything out of the ordinary” when they returned home. After nightfall, Tracy sat in her bedroom using her laptop but couldn’t shake the feeling that “something just ain’t right.”

She heard strange noises and noticed insulation falling from the ceiling. Her older sons went to investigate but couldn’t find anything.

Around 2:30 a.m., the noises persisted and Tracy, unable to sleep, saw nails in the ceiling fall to the floor.

She thought “there was some poltergeist stuff going on,” she said.

Tracy called her nephew, who quickly came to the home and went into the attic. Her nephew walked to the far end of the attic, passing over a jungle of heating and cooling ducts, boxes, photo albums, toys, cassettes and a “timeline” of memories to find a man sleeping inside a heating unit.

Tracy’s nephew also noticed that the man was able to peek at Tracy through an air vent in her ceiling.

“It’s got me flabbergasted,” she said. “How can you look at someone through an air vent?”

Tracy said she thought her ex went to Charleston after his latest arrest and was just commuting to Rock Hill.

Instead, he had been sneaking into her house and living in her attic, a Rock Hill Police report states. He used coats for cover and slept inside the heating unit.

After being discovered Sunday, the man climbed out of the attic without giving any explanation for why or how he got inside in the first place. He walked away with a smile. By the time police arrived, he was gone and remains at large.

For Tracy, who hustles each day to get her sons to football practices and says she is away from home for almost 12 hours a day, it’s unnerving to think her ex, who she says hangs around at nearby drug houses, is still roaming the neighborhood.

Her kids won’t sleep in their rooms, opting instead to camp out in the living room. Her family’s concerned how he was able to climb into the attic.

“I want him to be charged with it,” she said. “It could be somebody else he does the same thing to, but she might not be so lucky.”

Police describe the suspect as being a black male, 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighing 170 pounds.
