I get a feeling the "quote", about "the black flag" from Mencken, "could be" misconstrued by an unsuspecting new visitor to this forum, like me, to mean that we all believe "it's time for, nothing but, violence." This is not what you are advocating by posting Mencken's quote, are you?

On the contrary, I'm sure that many of our proud men have lived their whole lives, in "times of peace" of course, even if, only in small isolated geographical areas, without having to shed blood violently.

I think the quote at face value may not always necessarily be true. Have all men throughout history beeen required to physically shed blood in their lifetimes?

Yes many have had to do that in the past and theoretically, as the world turns, and history repeats itself, men may be required to do that again at some point in the future.

Obviously my concern would be whether or not we should be exhausting all of our peaceful options first. It would appear that violence isn't always our best option. When faced with Fight or Flee. Sometimes it is wiser to Flee, and Be able to fight another day, with better odds of course.

Please calm my fears and tell me, That Mencken is using colorful, figurative, and symbolic language to describe the best approach to fight the psychological wars that are being waged, battled, and either won or lost in our minds.

We must figuratively, commence to cutting those things out of our lives and personalities that are preventing us from reaching our true potential as a people. Sure we all need to trim the fat now and then, to stay, lean, mean, fighting machines. Figuratively, so to speak.
