AJACCIO (AFP-EJP)---French Jewish leaders condemned a gun attack on three youths of north African origin celebrating the end of Ramadan in Ajaccio, on the island of Corsica.
One of the trio was seriously injured in the eye late on Friday night after
four shots were fired from a hunting rifle as the group marked Eid al-Fitr
which ended the Muslim holy month of fasting.
CRIF, the umbrella representativer group of French Jewish organisations, condemned the attack “with the utmost severity” and expressed its solidarity with the three youths.
In a statement, CRIF expressed the hope “that the investigation will determine if it was a racist act” and that the aggressors will be quickly arrested and punished with the utmost firmness.
The French National Bureau of Vigilance Against Anti-Semitism (BNVCA) also condemned the aggression.
Police are treating the incident -- which they refused at this stage to qualify as racist -- as attempted murder.
The trio also on Saturday issued a call for calm through a local youth association after demonstrations which also saw a group break into and vandalise the apartment of a suspect -- starting a blaze which firefighters had to put out.
Investigators have arrested a 44-year-old man from the area of Ajaccio, on the west coast of the Mediterranean island. Four rifles and ammunition were seized from his home. The man denies any involvement.
A second man, a 21-year-old, is also being held for questioning.
