Number of jobless will hit 300,000 next year

UNEMPLOYMENT is set to spiral to 8pc next year, a level not seen since the early days of the Celtic Tiger in 1998.

According to the ESRI, unemployment will reach an 11-year high in 2009, bringing it to half the level it was at during the emigration-hit mid-1980s when tens of thousands of workers left the country each year in search of work.

The latest predictions mean that by the end of next year, there will be more than 300,000 on the dole.

"The increase in unemployment will wipe out all the reductions in unemployment made over the last decade," said Fine Gael deputy leader Richard Bruton.

Labour party finance spokeswoman Joan Burton said: "The most alarming finding is that unemployment will reach 8pc next year. It is now more important than ever that the Government bring forward a jobs strategy to deal with the spiralling problem of unemployment."
