August 13th 1977: Violent clashes at NF march
More than 200 protesters have been arrested after demonstrations in Lewisham against a National Front (NF) march.
Approximately 110 people, including 55 police officers, were injured during the disturbances in south east London.
For much of the day the 3,000 police officers on duty in Lewisham had managed to avoid a confrontation between the extreme right-wing NF and opposing groups.
A rally by the All Lewisham Campaign against Racism and Fascism (Alcaraf) passed off peacefully in the morning.
However by 1330GMT an estimated 400 Socialist Workers Party members had gathered in Lewisham in anticipation of the NF march at 1400.
But, apart from a few minor skirmishes, the 3,000 police officers on duty succeeded in keeping the two groups apart.
In frustration at having failed to prevent the NF march the crowd of anti-fascist supporters vented their anger on the police.
Officers were attacked with bottles and bricks and also had ammonia sprayed in their faces.
'Deliberately provocative'
A least one policeman was knocked unconscious and two mounted officers were dragged from their horses.
The severity of the onslaught led to officers using riot shields - the first time such equipment has been used in the UK outside Northern Ireland.
Questions are now being raised as to why Metropolitan Police Commissioner David McNee refused to use the Public Order Act to ban the march in spite of the NF admitting the march was "deliberately provocative".
Spokesman Richard Edmonds said by demonstrating in Lewisham - an area with a high proportion of West Indian immigrants - they were "standing up for white people" and highlighting the disproportionate amount of street crime committed in the area by black youths.

I was there in Lewisham on that day. Our coach from Manchester got 'trashed' by armed communists in Manchester, so we had to travel down in a removals van. We couldn't even get near the assembly point.
The Manchester NF banner that Tilzey mentions in his book NO RETREAT, was with us in the van. It was never on the march as Tilzey describes in his book. The drum corps was with us too.
There were about 10,000 + reds and foreign scum out against us on that day. It was a shocker

I have quite a few others, but unfortunately the bandwidth is quite small on this site. I will post some others on here soon.
Nonetheless, we are very pleased that we are welcome on this board. :)

Wtf, a whole Red infantry division, eh?
Please post some pics of the scum, if you have them. That figure is astounding. 10 friggin thousand; there's not that many Reds in all of America. How many "good" guys?
The Manchester NF banner that Tilzey mentions in his book NO RETREAT...
Is this book any good? Is this Tizey on our side or theirs?

NO RETREAT by Dave Hann & Steve Tilzey. Publishers MILO. No, they are two trotskyist scum that were ringleaders in armed attacks against the NF and the BNP in the 1980s and 1990's. Both were drummed out of the far left. One for beating up and mugging gaymen in Manchester. The other for being involved in State involvement with Searchlight communist jewish magazine.
The book is interesting, but they both tell a few lies about their escapades.
Apparently there have not been too many copies of the book sold.
Pics of the Reds ? OK I will scan a couple in. BRB.

This pic was of the Police trying to clear Clifton Rise , Lewisham, South London in 1977. About 10, 000 reds and black filth were out on that day to smash the NF. About 2,000+ NF members made it onto the march. Many others got attacked and beaten up on the day.
Hope the pic turns out OK.

This pic shows the NF stewards at the start of the Lewisham 1977 march. They had to really work that day. Derrick Day is one of the stewards. Another on that day, was an ex-professional boxer.

This pic shows the NF march setting off. We can clearly see late NF members like Ken McKilliam with the large moustache. Old favourite Keith Axon from 'Brum', is visible on the pic too .

The boot goes in hard.
This pic shows the front of the NF march on its 'rough journey' that day. NF stewards fight their way through the communist scum. 13th August 1977,Lewisham, South London, a date for the history books.

They got through on that day. It was the first time that the Police on mainland United Kingdom, had to employ riot shields, due to the 'reds' use of bricks, bottles, petrol bombs and acid sprays against the police.

John Tyndall speaks to those heroes of white nationalism at the rally, after the Lewisham riots. To his right, I think that is Richard Edmonds.

This is a pic of Martin Webster, who was the National Activities Organiser for the National Front at the time. He is seen here telling the media that the NF would be marching again, in Manchester, a few weeks later. I was there at that march too. :D

This pic shows the communists breaking the National Front march. Thankfully the NF regrouped and made their way to the meeting point .
This was rough going.

I must admit, even though Webster's sexual antics needed for him to be dispenced with.......when he marched alone with the flag and banner, it was such a shame he was such a raving poof. That day he did have balls
These photo's show, we can't let the BNP go down the same road as what happend in 1980 in splits...White Nationalists - Its time to FIGHT !

Yep, Hyde Town Hall, Tameside, Greater Manchester, and he marched on his own. Well, he had 3,000 police officers with him. Webster told me, he thought he was going to be assassinated that day, on the lone march.

I always think of Webster and think "what a shame"..but as a poof, he can't control himself...and thus his exclusion was right in the end.

He/Webster fell out with me fairly recently, for what, I do not know.
Mark Cotterill said I was unique, in that I was on good terms with Webster and Tyndall. I know of a few others that are, but I don't want to be too pedantic here.

Thanks for posting the pics, heaven above. I loved that one with the police returning the favor to the scum by tossing the bricks back. Classic! It's so odd not to see "riot police" in their sci-fi type outfits, as they are now.
How many NF supporters were on the march? It looked like quite a few, but it's hard to tell from the pics. Is there a web page ( maybe a book, other than by the leftist you'd mentioned before) that describes the events in detail?

I don't know of any books about Lewisham 1977 , certainly haven't heard of any. Regarding NF numbers I believe that just over 2,000 actually got onto the march. Others had their way blocked or where attacked en route. The only safe passage that day ,was to have travelled via the 'tube/London underground.
