Auschwitz Shock
by Jeremy Last - Aug 13
A British student has expressed her shock and dismay after being subjected to a torrent of anti-semitic abuse during a visit to Auschwitz.
Leora Nagus was with 50 Polish, Israeli and American Jewish youths on the trip to the notorious camp on Sunday when a French tourist approached the group.
He began shouting at one student holding an Israeli flag, claiming he should not be carrying it around Auschwitz. He then screamed at the other students telling them to go back to Israel :D .
Nagus, born in Israel to English parents, told TJ: “I was amazed that something like that could happen, especially where we were, looking at a model of a crematorium in one of the barracks.
“We have a right to walk around any way we want to, especially considering the history of Auschwitz. We are proud to be citizens of the Jewish state. I didn’t cry but my heart was racing after I spoke to him.”
A second Frenchman then grabbed the arm of 22-year-old Polish student Maya Ober and began arguing with her. Ober said: “It was a very tense situation and some people in our group started to cry. It was shocking because it was the last place we’d expect anti-semitism or anti-Israel attitudes. These men seem to be happy to be in Auschwitz, like they were visiting Disneyland.”:D
