I think i saw a show on one of the satellite channels, Free Speech TV or something about 1 year old babies being raped there.

The three men convicted of gang-raping a visiting Belgian student have spent their first weekend behind bars as sentenced prisoners.

Sibusiso Mkhize, 21, Xolani Letuke, 25, and Mandla Dlamini, 27, were sentenced to an effective imprisonment of 18, 19 and 20 years respectively at the Johannesburg High Court on Friday.

"A woman's body is sacrosanct and anyone who violates it does so at his own peril," said Judge Mlindelwa Makhanya before telling the three he was not going to impose the minimum sentence of life in prison.

The trio were convicted late last year on charges of theft, kidnapping and gang-raping the Belgian student in 2005.

The student, who was 17-years-old at the time, and had been in the country for only a few days, had gone to a party with her host family in Mapetla, Soweto, when she was abducted and taken to a nearby house.

There she was gang-raped before her assailants stole her jewellery, cellphone and cash. The house in which she was raped belonged to Dlamini.

While describing the rape as "heinous, horrific and degrading", Judge Makhanya said there were "substantial and compelling" reasons that forced him to deviate from imposing life imprisonment.

"Though serious, this rape cannot be classified among the worst rapes," he said, adding that there was no evidence the victim sustained serious injury.

Judge Makhanya, however questioned some aspects of the South African legal system on rape.

"We may as well state that there should only be one sentence in respect of all rape cases, but that is not the position at the moment as the law states. But if we want to change the law and have one uniform sentence for all rape, let parliament say so," the judge said.

Part of the substantial and compelling reasons for imposing the lesser sentence, Judge Makhanya said, was that when the rape was committed, Mkhize was still a juvenile, while both Letuke and Dlamini had just entered adulthood.

Despite Dlamini having a previous conviction for armed robbery, Judge Makhanya said all the convicts were good prospects for rehabilitation.

However, the judge condemned the vicious cycle of rape against women in the country.

He decried the fact that despite judges using strong words to condemn rape, it continued unabated.

As the three men were led back into the holding cells to start serving their sentences, Mkhize's visibly distraught mother, Sibongile Mkhize, battled to hold back tears.

I do remember that of those arrested it was only those who actually raped her and left their DNA that were convicted. Those who were waiting for their turn to rape her, but didn't have a chance because of the police, were let off.
