BIG HIKE IN ENERGY BILLS SKY NEWS 24/8/08

British Gas has announced big price hikes for its millions of customers.

Domestic gas bills are set to rise by 12.4% and electricity by 9.4%.


The increases will come into effect from September 20.

The company says the record price of wholesale gas, which also effects the cost of electricity, is to blame.

A spokesman said the increases would add an extra 7p a day to electricity bills.

Gas bills for the average domestic customer will go up by 13p a day.

The hikes are the second this year from British Gas.

It upped both gas and electricity household bills by 5.9% in January.

The British Gas spokesman said the depletion of North and Irish Sea gas reserves meant the days of cheap UK energy were over.

But he added: "We have confidence the investments we are now making will put downward pressure on commodity costs for the benefit of all our customers."

[For our US friends Gas is , well gas. Petrol is what you call 'gas' in the USA, and that is going up in cost in the UK too ! ] :eek:

On top of interest rate hikes, and people putting more and more on their credit cards, they are getting in more and more debt.

Hopefully it will mean that the economy is riding for a fall.

I certainly feel a lot poorer these days.Glad to hear it's not just my imagination-we really are being bled dry to pay for black ladies with buggies etc etc

Also econmists are saying pension funds are totally knackered.So more poverty for most people later in life. But let's not forget ,this Labour government has taken 5billion out of the pension fund every year since coming to power in 1997.

Tony Blair is ruining this country with his ugly cohort Gordon Brown.
Everyone is crippled by tax and the cost of living is shooting up with the horrendous council tax rises and now fuel.
Its about time some more development was done to move away from fossil fuels.
I've been trying to get Brit Gas to upgrade my gas supply. So far and 8 weeks later am still waiting for the gits. We have a privatised monopoly with the gas and electric and now we will pay and pay and pay.
I hate the bloody Labour Party.
Stink hole Iraq and our forces put at risk for nothing. now we have 1000 Americans killed there.
Gordon Brown will bankrupt this country. He has already started borrowing. I work in a sector that reflects the economy and I reckon we now have a big and hidden recession.
Personal debt is unbelievable and a friend of mine who earns a low wage admits to owning £36K!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
