Just braught a new computer(manly) the goal of said pc is run linpack/24/7 So I stuck the box in my computer desk. You know those wooden=cabinets.
You know those desktop things you buy that has a wooden case for you to drop the computer into. You know what I'm talking about.
After about an hour of computations that computer shut down and gave some screen that if I were O/C etc, etc.. It was due to heat issues. I'm like wtf is going on.. I removed said computer from said desktop cabinate and have had absolutely no problems..
My point... if you're running high end computers. DO NO PUT THEM IN THOSE WOODEN cabinets that are made for computers.
I took the box out of the cab and set it on floor with rest of them an had no problems. With those wooden cabs what you're doing is reclining hot air.

Matter of fact I have.. Lookit, if use windows and have no use for quadx4 running Lapack on high end Unix systems than I can see where you would have a prob with this post.. My point..The computer was over heating while in a desk box(box-due-to-lack-of air-flow) - I removed the computer and set in floor and have had no such reboots due to heating issues. Make of this what you want.. Keep in mind that people use diff O/S for diff things. Are the O/S use run using 100% cpu 24/7? I have computers that due just that.

One thing to check is that if you are running a *nix machine it may not support the motherboard devices that control the fans. Or is it that the fans are spinning but there just isn't enough air flow? You can also cut a slot in the back of the shelf to increase the air flow.

I've been using these type of sytems for years.... The prob stems for the these new computers cases/housing.
Older computers had fans in the backend... Theses news boxes have input air flows in the front and on the sides to disepate heat....Obstruct those air flows in an encased box al la computer desktops
and whatch the heat rise.... don't take my word for it: drop one of your boxes into one of these enclosed furinture things and mon the tmp...REMOVE THE SAME BOX AND SET IT OUT IN THE OPEN & THEN LOOK AT THE TEMPS.
Give it a try.....and report your resutls....

I agree with you. I have a box that lives in a cabinet just fine, until the summer. Then I have to leave the case open otherwise it crashes.
