She is black and tan and came from a good ol white country farmer. I need a really good German name for her AKC certificate and I thought someone on the forum might be able to suggest something appropriate and within the 25 character guideline for AKC names.

She's my only pet right now and I'll take some pics tonight and post them sometime between now and tomorrow. God, I forgot how much work pups are. I've been holding her like a baby for the last hour while I was at the computer. The little thing went right to sleep and stayed that way till I woke her up to go potty outside (for the 4th time in 3 hours). I'm thinking about going ahead and getting a Siamese kitten because I don't want her to think cats are chew toys. All the other Dobermans I owned were raised around cats and never even tried to hurt one. I don't trust dogs that are hateful towards cats, and wouldn't want one around my children.

Those were the Dobermans I used to own several years ago. I have never, ever heard of a Dobie attacking their owner, although I don't deny it could happen. The ones that wind up turning on the owners are usually a Rottweiler or a Pit Bull. Between 1979 and 1996 Dobies were responsible for a total of 8 deaths. Pit Bulls were responsible for 60 and Rotts for 29 http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/00047723.htm#00002439.htm

If you plan to work with her and train her up to her abilities you might consider a name with a sharp sound that gets her attention and works for your voice/tone. One or two-syllable names are likely best.
Try some out at with her at different ranges.
I'm not a dog-trainer, it just seems a practical approach.

I almost opted for the kitten today. It was kind of a birthday present for me to get whatever pet I wanted and we had discussed everything from a ferret to a yorkie, but I just couldn't settle for less than what I really wanted. I opened the newspaper and saw the ad and we wound up driving an hour to get the pup. My husband admitted he is already so attached to her he wouldn't sell her for three times what we paid for her, LOL. I really do need to go get a kitten though, because I could never live with myself if a dog of mine hurt a cat. I loathe animal abuse but have a special hatred for those who abuse cats, or allow/teach their dogs to. Every dog I have ever owned has grown up around cats and they learned real early no bullying would be tolerated. I'll have to go see these kittens first, I want one that looks like Dr. Pierce's cat Hadley, the really well-bred type, with the sharp features and good markings. If I get one I'll probably have to make an online photo album of all their pics because I will have the camera going nonstop.

Whoever owned those dogs probably had less sense than them and didn't know how to train them properly. Mine are taught who the boss is from day one. Also, unneutered male dogs tend to become aggressive as they age where females usually keep the same temperament. And when you have three of them, it's a recipe for disaster (pack mentality). The breeder I worked with the most had 3 of hers escape their kennel once and they killed a deer and dragged pieces of it into the yard. They also dragged a shoe into the yard (who knows where they got it) and she actually thought her dogs had killed a person. She said she just about passed out from the sight of it all but she was really relieved to find out it was just a deer. Several years ago a woman and her son near me were killed by their two Rotts and very recently a little girl was attacked in her own yard by an 8 month old pit bull. She almost died, I will spare everyone the gory details of the story but it was awful. I would never, ever, trust either of those breeds with my children. I always socialize my dogs early, taking them to parks and letting them play with other people, which is probably why they turn out to be such pussies. Luckily, most people don't have the balls to test them.

Don't remember the details, a guy in California was killed about 20 yrs ago by his male and female Dobies, but they did not seem to be very social dogs, he kept them out on the backyard in a fenced area with a doghouse. Attacked him when he went to feed them.

Another seemingly knowledgeable guy I knew who owned Dobermans claimed that Doberman brains keep growing even after maturity and their skulls do not, and so they get crazier as they get older from the pain. I don't have the foggiest notion if that is true however

They are too high strung for me, if I was going to have a dog, it would be a Basset Hound :)

Some of our bitches names I've liked were as follows: Greta, Fredrica & Valkyrie. Call or ring names were Gret, Freda & Val with our family kennel, von Sch... I am a Former Vet Tech, unless you plan on showing, which bitches are hard to title, Id advise you to leave her ears un cropped, Very very brutal surgery. Very painful, & they dont forget,
so sometimes cropped dogs get nippy about touching their ears & wont tolorate it, but that is FEAR not aggression.

Good points about the dog's temperament. I'm not going to show her but I am possibly going to put her through the Companion Dog program and the Canine Good Citizen Certification. She is exhibiting intelligence that I have never witnessed in a 6 week old pup. I am definately going to have her ears done though, because my main purpose of getting her was home protection and the sight of a Doberman on alert with cropped ears straight up is enough to discourage almost anyone from breaking in a house. I've been through the ear cropping process a dozen times, and although they do have some discomfort from it, it's really the way they were intended to look, and serves the purpose of if they ever are put in the position of having to attack, there is less to grab on to and pull the dog off. Mine always healed fast though and they never were weird about having their ears touched. Right after I mentioned the Siamese kitten I wanted, we took the pup for a walk and found the most beautiful dark brown, long haired, green eyed cat I have ever seen. She looked about 9 months old, not quite full grown, and when I petted her I could feel her backbone, she seemed malnourished :( so of course I took her home to feed her.....and discovered she is getting ready to drop a litter of kittens. So it looks like the pup will get PLENTY of cat socialization after all.

I'm glad they cut her tail short. I hate seeing one with a tail that's a notch too long. I will admit I am going to have her ears cropped. A vet tried to talk me out of it yesterday when she got her shots but he made no impact on either me or my husband. Frankly, I think they look like goofy hound dogs without their ears cropped. I really got her for protection so the ears are going to have to be done because to me that's the main thing that makes them look intimidating. It has to hurt less than a male dog having it's balls cut off, and ALL vets advocate that!! :p

I will admit I am going to have her ears cropped. A vet tried to talk me out of it yesterday when she got her shots but he made no impact on either me or my husband. Frankly, I think they look like goofy hound dogs without their ears cropped. I really got her for protection so the ears are going to have to be done because to me that's the main thing that makes them look intimidating. You never know when one might be looking for a house to break into and as far as I'm concerned, it's better safe than sorry. Unfortunately I have lived in a few nigger infested areas in my life but have had not even one close call with them. Probably the fact that my male Dobes were kept behind a 4 ft fence that appeared very easy for them to jump didn't hurt. What the niggers never knew was that I had an electric dog fence running all the way around the inside of it and after one try they never attempted to cross it again.
