NF targets estate in leaflet campaign
Oldham Evening Chronicle - Monday, 06 September, 2004
A leafleting campaign on Holts by the National Front on Saturday
brought renewed fear of trouble.
But representatives of the Front spent only a short time on the
estate, where tensions have already been running high in the light of
an attack on a Holts man in Glodwick.
A spokesman for Oldham police said: "We were concerned that this
might cause more trouble. We had officers in the area. But
fortunately the leafleting passed off without incident."
The National Front finished their round and moved off to concentrate
on an area of Stockport.
Holts man, Anthony Gilday (21), was battered beyond recognition as he
walked home through Glodwick after a night out with friends on
Sunday, August 22.
The four attackers, Asian men, stole the victim's wallet and mobile
phone.
Anthony then faced hours of surgery at the Royal Oldham Hospital to
reconstruct his face after the unprovoked attack by the gang in
Waterloo Street.
The thugs pummelled the young man's face so badly that he sustained a
broken jaw, a broken cheekbone and other facial fractures. The most
serious injuries were cuts to his face which caused his skin to tear
off the side of his face.
