Experienced an incredible pain in my temple one day while working out, saw a Dr. He said I have a very adverse reaction to nicotine and said it would kill me if I kept smoking. Don't know if he was right, but it made sense at them time. Went home, tossed the pack, never looked back. So it's been 32 years now smoke-free.

I think smoking may be more prevalent in us older folks. I grew up with smoking being a normal part of life.

I remember from 9th grade on we had smoking areas in the public schools. I used to smoke like a chimney at work when I lived in Detroit. Yes, we smoked at our desks and in conference rooms during meetings. We could smoke just about anywhere. Theaters, grocery stores, hospitals, and jet planes.

All of that has changed. Now I feel like a criminal if I light up in public.

I know smoking is very bad for my health but I do enjoy it very much.

I'm straight edged myself. Two close family member just quit due to their asthma and their emphysema. My father used to cough up half a lung, especially when he got sick. Drinking is another thing, I do drink on occasion. There are no alcoholics in my family. You could almost call me a Fundamentalist Latter Day Saint.:D Just kidding. :D

I quit a year and four months ago, I started by using the patch for 8 weeks and what ultimately helped is that I became extremely antisocial, I avoided everybody and every place that could tempt to me to smoke, not good for the social life but it works. This is the longest I have been without cigs since my junior year in high school, I quit because I figured I could still get away with it if I quit at 35.

Amongst the things that have improved for me is that I no longer cough anymore, before I quit I was coughing daily, I also had cramps in my feet and legs, those things are all gone now, for a while gained 5 kilos over my normal weight but that has gone down now and I´m learning to get control over my appetite.

While a tobacco tax is a politically popular funding source, it has several significant shortcomings:
A tobacco tax disproportionately burdens low-income Americans, lacks long-term stability, and ultimately results in significant shifting of health care costs onto others.
With the number of smokers already declining, a tobacco tax would further reduce the number of smokers, thereby eroding the funding source.
To produce the revenues that Congress needs to fund SCHIP expansion through such a tax would require 22.4 million new smokers by 2017.
Rather than making SCHIP dependent on increasing the number of smokers, Congress should refrain from narrow government program expansions and work on a broader strategy for improving access to affordable, private health insurance for all Americans--including children.

My wife's brother-in-law has smoked for decades. He's also a prick. I've seen him publicly humiliate his young son on hundreds of occasions. What really sucks is that his son now acts the same way he does, and I think he'll end up smoking. It breaks my heart . . . :(

I couldn't face the day or a long day without a cup or two, at most, of coffee. However, if you use coffee before going to the range and are a disciplined shooter and record keeper, you'll notice a remarkable difference in your groups on drugs. In battle, it should be verboten.

Alcohol impairs judgment. Period. That is not to say I don't enjoy wine wiht meals occasionally and a shot of Jim Beam nightly. I'm over the hill however but if of necessity I had to make a comeback, I'd drop the alcohol and keep up the coffee (with aspirin) at least when training.

That would have been 20 years after my dad quit the same way. Never looked back. However, he died of a giant, inoperable lung tumor occluding his coronary artery. He was very hearty, played varsity college football and basketball and was from Tuscan peasant farm stock on one side and Scots Irish colliers on the other.

A film aired on PBS suggested to me that the composition of cigarettes, these days, intentionally makes it more difficult to quit. It was the most eye-opening presentation I've ever had with regard to the tobacco industry, though I'm sure there are others at least as good.

I'm not convinced Jews "push" smoking on anyone- there's plenty of adverts on the Jewish TV about quitting smoking, and people are generally encouraged to give up smoking, or preferably not start to begin with.

The Federal government plays both sides, too, including paying for research and education to try to stop smoking, prosecuting tobacco companies, etc., and pays farmers a subsidy (Google "tobacco allotment") to grow tobacco and a lot of Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and other hard scrabble farmers simply could not have afforded to stay on the family farm, right or wrong, without it. However, post WWII, the federal government interfered with food pricing and encouraged bank loans such that they created the problem of it being so tough on small farmers. I'm with Ed Steele on government being the problem but then who's essentially occupied the government and made the public policy? Hint: Look at Obama's appointments. The corporations take on a life of their own and amorally pursue profits; its the law and policy that provides the opportunities and pushes the penalties out of the way that create those monsters. I believe these pages help us identify the head of the snake.

To me, it doesn't matter who's behind promoting expensive addictions that decrease birth rates and waste resources including our very lives. I'm for informed voluntary suicide, which the government opposes for the same reason it opposes homicide, not because it opposes killing people (consider war) but because they don't want dead taxpayers worth at least a million dollars in revenue per life.

The point of the survey is awareness, yours and mine, of the extent to which we subsidize self-destruction and waste of our energy. Anybody believe we're not at total genocidal war? Then sharpen your soldiering skills ("move, shoot, and communicate"), yes, but also I think about what physicians are taught: "First, do no harm."

There is no shortage of information out there, however, but that was not the point of the thread and neither was preaching. Reasoning eventually perhaps if the need was apparent. But I was curious, as I'm sure some others are, too, as to how many of us smoke.

It was the preaching that prompted me to post. The self-righteousness of regular non-smokers is bad enough. Anti-smoking Nazis are intolerable.

I am not sure, but to me these electronic smokes remind me of vaporizers except for the fact there is no tobacco or herbs inserted.

As trust in the government fades fast in the United States, they may be on the verge of another critical mistake: outlawing electronic cigarettes and giving smokers only two options: quit or die.

GAINESVILLE, Fla., Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- A recent laboratory study performed at the request of the Food and Drug Administration revealed ingredients in e-cigarettes that skeptics suspected all along. The minuscule presence of diethylene glycol, an ingredient that is found in antifreeze and certain levels of nitrosamines, were found in some cartridges.

Concern over the safety of these products is at a peak and the opposition questions the effects of the product on people's health as well as the theory that the different flavored cartridges will attract children.

"When I think of the type of person that would use an e-cigarette, I think of a person who wants a good alternative to real cigarettes, not a child or a non-smoker," says Juliet Herstrom, a supporter of e-cigarettes. "It's not labeled as a cessation device, but they can't control what people try to use it for."

The e-cigarette is neither a cessation device nor has it been classified by the FDA as of this time.

"It matters, of course, that there is the presence of this chemical in e-cigarettes," continues Herstrom. "But given the choice between the two, the smarter choice for a smoker is the e-cigarette. Hands down."

Another supporter of e-cigarettes, Michael Norton, sounds off. "It's ridiculous. It really is. They find a single chemical in the e-liquid and suddenly e-cigarettes are dangerous. How about the fact that tobacco cigarettes contain this same chemical and thousands of others at higher concentrations? How come those nicotine patches and inhalers are allowed to be sold? Why is there all of this concern when there are already products that deliver nicotine?"

Jennifer Corcoran, a supporter and user of e-cigarettes, declares that "there will be war in the courtroom if any law is passed that prohibits the sale of these devices." She, among others, believes that the e-cigarette could truly help smokers stop smoking. "I'm on month 3, and I haven't smoked a cigarette since I turned to the e-cigarette. If these are banned, the FDA will have hell to pay!"

Amidst the controversy, the e-cigarette, a product that could very well revolutionize the smoking industry, has collected the loyalty of its supporters.
