An article appeared in a national newspaper talking about foreign nurses working for the NHS in Newcastle not being able to understand "Geordie". It said nurses from places like Singapore,Phillippines and India, who had passed English language tests before being recruited, could barely understand the North-East accent. With them so puzzled NHS bosses have decided to launch ten-week courses to help them out. The paper then printed some Geordie phrases with the English translation: Me heed's proppa knackin man- I have a severe headache. Wen am a gan yem?- I say what is my discharge date? wen am a hevin me bait?- What time is dinner served? Wot's rang with us?- What's your diagnosis? Divint cum awa aal hoyty toyty- I don't care for your bedside manner one joint. It's nitherin' in hea man- Would you mind closing the window? Ahm feelin canny femmer- I have come over rather faint. Is it bord or a gadgie?-What sex is my baby? Wor bairn's hacky mucky- My baby needs a wash Ah wes pelatick- I was very drunk. Had away and shite- I'm not sure you're correct in your diagnosis. The last two make me laugh the most. But on a more serious note, this just shows how bad we treat our nurses.Long hours, low pay,not enough will do it.Let's bring in cheap labour from the third world.
