This is just to see what you folks think of this idea... We've already taken nearly every other security measure available to us, with the exception of giving mod status to all the regulars here. How would everyone feel about having their posts moderated until they've proven themselves to be ok?
Even if they do, it's simple to ban them, but every new member will have their posts moderated, and their PMs disabled until they've been properly screened. This includes making sure they're not proxying, and not using an ip that is even close to a previously banned one. It means a bit more work for the existing mods, but I think it will be worth it and put a stop to this childish nonsense coming from people supposedly on our side. Vote.

It's hard to say until we get started. I'd imagine around 150-200 or less, considering it's just the new folks. It's a breeze to do, especially with as many active mods as we've got now.

I don't want this to turn into SF, and I think the mods should be as lenient as possible when moderating posts, it will just be a security precaution, if we even put this into effect. That's why I asked everyone's opinions, so everyone can weigh in on the issue and let us know what they think, or if they have a better solution. I don't agree with some of the bans that have been made, but the good outweigh the bad. I'd rather kill an innocent or 2 in a mass execution of 150 or so paedophiles, if you see what I mean.

It might be an idea to only moderate the first say 15 - 20 posts of a new member. Then review them before either banning them or letting them post. That way it will be quicker, but if someone is posting 20 one line messages that are obviously just to get off moderation, then surely they will stick out like a sore thumb.

I agree 20 sounds ok to me, but as you say if they are 20 bogus posts then you could extend their moderation period a while longer (if you don't tell them they are still under moderation, they may fall into the trap!) That would be fun all that work by a troll for nothing! :D :D

It is absolutely essential for everyone here that new posters be moderated. I say 100 posts is reasonable. Possibly less, final call is up to the admins. 20 is way too few though. Luckily I found a way to delete the posts fast and it didn't take me long. Also, we had 2 perverts at it this morning. This just cannot continue.

Is there no way to have Junior Moderators who just have a couple of moderator powers? I'm thinking 1) Banning people and 2) Deleting posts. No need to be able to edit posts or whatever else. And it would be made VERY clear that Junior Moderators should *only* use their abilities in the case of obviously awful stuff like porn-spamming. If they ban somebody for "anti" comments, that's going too far. That's what the regular mods are for. There's no leeway, and if a Junior Mod abuses his power then he's out the door both as a mod and as a member. By making the top 8 or so members (just going by postcount) Junior Mods we'd have the board covered basically 24/7. And "opinionated" members like Norcalnative would be just fine as this kind of mod since they'd be limited in their powers.

Alternatively... would it be possible to limit new members to a certain forum? This worked fairly well on another WN board I used to frequent. A new member could only post in The PlayPen until they got approved by a mod. Approval could come either by 1) showing themselves to be reasonable posters or 2) by having a trusted member vouch for them. In the meantime they could post unlimited numbers of posts in the Playpen but not be able to spam the rest of the forums. All (approved) members were requested to spend a certain amount of time in the Playpen in order to provide topics for conversation so as to weed out the bad newbies.

Another suggestion.... Anonymous Moderators. The first web forum I ever used frequently (forums.anandtech.com, a computer/technology site with over 100,000 members in the forum) used Anonymous Mods, and I thought that it was pretty successful. There was none of the "passing the buck" of "Well, this other mod did that and I don't want to go against him"... no pleading with one moderator to change the decision of another moderator. Basically it took away the ability for a user to play one mod off of another. All inter-moderator problems were handled privately in the moderators-only forum. Sometimes after a discussion/vote they would rescind decisions made hastily by one mod. But all of that was taken care of behind the scenes. People had some idea of who the moderators were, but they could never be sure. Publicly identifying a moderator was strictly verboten. There was a single user account "Anandtech Moderator" which was used by all the mods. I imagine that this saved a lot of headaches for the mods, in terms of PM inboxes being filled, and just general abuse in the forum "Why'd you do this, why'd you do that, wah wah wah you're such an asshole".

Anyway, I don't know if all of these features are available in vBulletin, but they're my suggestions for improving VNNF and reducing the spam problem.

I support the main topic of this thread, though, if it won't mean too much extra work for the mods, although it seems that it would.

Use a certain number (50, 100, 500, whatever) of posts as a guideline, but not necessarily a fixed rule. When you get someone like Hadding or Jerry Abbot, it won't take more than a few posts to see that they are contributing. When someone is here just to entertain themselves, albeit harmlessly, they may require 5000 or so just to make sure.

No, that's punishing everybody for a few freaks' sins. The people who are spamming this place are almost guaranteed to be using proxies left and right. Their IPs won't be trace-able. However, those of us here who aren't spamtrolls have no real reason to mask our IPs at the moment -- I trust the admins here. But, if my IP was broadcast for the world to see, I'd have to start using a proxy, and I think most VNNF members would do the same. However, many of our most valuable members are older and/or somewhat "tech-unsavvy," and using a proxy might not be the best solution.

In other words, the people you're trying to punish won't be affected at all since it's guaranteed that they're using proxies (otherwise they wouldn't be able to post because presumably the mods ban certain IPs). Those of us who aren't using proxies (i.e. the honest people) will have our IPs shown.

Having an automated system would could make things a bit complicated if a poster is making too make one liner posts or some other bullshit. A warning would be given to the poster and possibly their Moderation time increased. Or a ban if they were obviously a troll. Best way to do it in my opinion. A little more work for mods but it would stop any random registered trolls from doing any harm to this forum. Even if no mod was on it would be no problem at all.

And it's not "deffo insulting" for people to say that Tom88's basically some sort of Anti-WN conspiritor, and curse his name, and insult all the work that he's done and continues to do for VNNF?

Enough people here don't realize that VNNF occupies a VERY special place on the Internet. "Normal web forums" don't get hit like this so continually. Maybe a few of the very biggest ones do, but they tend to have some sort of limiting policy for people to sign up. For example, at Anandtech.com (100,000+ users) you can't sign up with a Yahoo, Hotmail, or AOL e-mail account. You have to use a "real" ISP account. Here at VNNF there are two things that are special: 1) A desire on the part of Alex Linder to have the forum be truly open and free, where people are NOT banned because of their ideas; and 2) We have a concentration of some of the greatest minds fighting for the White Race as active, contributing members of the forum.

It's basically like painting a big target on our backs for the forum to be so open, but I really appreciate the idea and hope that the forum can continue to be open. The steps taken towards moderation are a big step in the wrong direction, but unfortunately I don't know of a better solution that wouldn't mean hacking the vBulletin software and adding completely new features. Obviously something had to be done, so I grudgingly accept the moderation of new members, but I wish that there could be another solution.

Here is my opinion, Trolls will eventually get tired of their games and leave, and if they make a permanent change to VNNF then they will have won. When you make a permanent change to VNNF you encourage future attacks as the trolls see their work is paying off.

The next time they come back they will make another permanent change and then leave and the come back again and start the process over.

This will continue until VNNF no longer resembles it’s current state.

Weather the storm and don’t make any changes and when the trolls see their plans fail they will leave on their own.

My view, we needed changes made to the forum to stop the spammers. The changes have now been made and everything seems fine. :D

Yes, I was thinking just the same thing 999. Johny's been able to make over 100 posts and upset a large number of VNNF members in a very short time "under moderation".
