US obesity becomes bigger challenge

Latest figures have shown an ongoing surge in the rate of obesity in 23 US states, indicating that Americans are becoming fatter than they were one year ago.
While the obesity rate among adults has continued to increase, the report shows the rate as having a steady but alarming trend among children.
According to the report recently released by the Trust for America's health, two-thirds of American adults are either obese or overweight. Some 30 percent of American children are suffering from obesity or are overweight.
For the fifth year in a row, Mississippi with more than 32.5% obese adults ranked highest in the annual obesity rate ranking. West Virginia, Alabama and Tennessee, were the states, which were placed next in the ranking.
The report revealed that widespread obesity increases the risk of developing chronic diseases and is also responsible for growing healthcare costs.
"Our health care costs have grown along with our waist lines," said Jeff Levi, executive director of Trust for America's health, stressing that tackling obesity can positively influence the recent US economic crisis.
Scientists warned that the US obesity epidemic could result in dramatic consequences unless lawmakers adopt special health plans to combat obesity, which is in itself the underlying cause of other problems including heart disease, diabetes and cancer.
