Yeah, I've thought similar about many of the situations presented in the LOTR series. Nationalism behind fantasy is very effective because it presents itself in a non threatening manner. Sure it'll go over most of the lemming's heads, but it is there for the "fencesitter" to make a moral decision in the near future.
