Breastfeeding cuts breast cancer risk

Breastfeeding can lower the risk of developing breast malignancies particularly in high-risk women who have a positive family history for the disease.
According to a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, women with a close family history of breast cancer are 59 percent less vulnerable to developing breast cancer if they nurse their babies.
The risk reduction following nursing is reported to be similar to that in those who take the hormone therapy tamoxifen to prevent breast cancer.
Taking certain medication to suppress the production of breast milk is also reported to lower the risk of developing the condition by 42 percent.
Such an association, however, was not found in women without a family history of the disease.
Scientists concluded that breastfeeding can help breast tissue return to its pre-pregnancy state through lowering the breast's engorgement and inflammation, the main factors contributing to breast cancer.
They, therefore, urged women with a positive family history for breast cancer to breastfeed their baby to protect themselves against the condition.
