Dan is talking about the fact that many cars in the US now have black
box devices (referred to as an Event Data Recorder), similar to the
black box on an airplane. Depending on the model they can record
vehicle speed, engine speed, braking intervals, throttle position etc.
It was a largely unknown fact until a recent criminal case was
prosecuted based on data recovered from an EDR.
They are soon to be GPS-enabled, California and Oregon already have
pilots going to track vehicles via GPS satellite and levy a fee to the
driver/owner based on which roads were traveled at what time of the
day. States are trying to recover costs associated with hybrid
vehicles, with gas pricing being so high every hybrid or alternative
fuel vehicle purchased translates to reduced gas tax revenue for local
and state governments.
