Shelby County employee suspended in bugging probe

MEMPHIS, Tenn. A Shelby County employee was suspended with pay as
part of an investigation into the suspected bugging of the Homeland
Security office in Memphis.

Fire Department Lieutenant Matt Snyder -- who's been on interim
detail in the security office -- was suspended yesterday.

That's according to Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton.

Reached at his home, Snyder told The Commercial Appeal newspaper only
that -- quote -- "I'm not allowed to talk."

Also yesterday, county Chief Administrative Officer John Fowlkes said
his staff gave an inaccurate account Thursday that the FBI had found
four "crude" listening devices in the ceiling of the office.

Fowlkes said four listening devices were found, but it wasn't by the
FBI, and the federal agency isn't investigating.

Fowlkes refused to say who found the devices, how the wrong account
got out and why an employee had been suspended.

Wharton says the county will continue to investigate.
