Mark Kearney, a former detective sergeant in Milton Keynes, was
revealed this week as the man who carried out the surveillance on an
MP and a constituent at Woodhill Prison.

The 49-year-old, from Leighton Buzzard, says he was ordered to carry
out the bugging after he expressed doubts about it.

His exposure, after details of the operation were leaked to the
Sunday Times, has seen massive media interest.

Mr Kearney is also awaiting trial on charges of wilful misconduct in
a public office which are not related to the bugging allegations.

Yesterday (Wednesday) he told the Citizen: "The last couple of days
have been almost surreal.

"I am bewildered and I am worried about the effect of all this on my
family and friends."

He says he is keen for the inquiry ordered by Justice Secretary Jack
Straw on Monday to take place.

"I am absolutely disgusted that a sensitive document that I prepared
is now in the public domain.

"Clearly, I will not discuss the covert nature of my work. I will,
however, say that all the instructions my team acted upon had the
benefit of a full audit trail available to Government inspectors.

He said he was prepared to assist the inquiry, "but I have not yet been asked".

Tory Parliamentary candidate Iain Stewart has joined those raising
questions over the Woodhill bugging episode.

Mr Stewart, whose Milton Keynes South West constituency includes the
prison, said the suggestion that ministers knew nothing about the
bugging of a London MP's visit to a jailed constituent "begs
questions about who is really in charge of surveillance operations in
this country and whether ministers have got a grip on their departments".
