Former head of Pirelli Romania, arrested in eavesdropping scandal

Italy is shaking amid in a huge abuse of position and eavesdropping
scandal, according to the Italian media yesterday. Giuliano Tavaroli,
former head of Pirelli Romania, is accused of staging an
eavesdropping system meant to tap hundreds of thousands of
conversations. Tavaroli was also the head of the security department
of Telecom, one of Italia's telecommunication giants.
Among those whose conversations were taped are bankers, business
people and politicians.
Tavaroli had been leading the operations from Romania, according to
the Italian media. He started work for Telecom in 2001, when the
company was going through a crisis caused by a microphone found in
the car of the general director. Tavaroli was in charge of
reorganizing the security department and had managed to create a real
secret service, daily La Stampa commented. In 2004, when prosecutors
found out about the operation, he left the security department, but
was named Pirelli's Country Manager for Romania.
Among the spying devices used for eavesdropping, the Italian media
counts the "radar" - a server used for keeping and analyzing data, a
system of supervising the computers of those spied on, and "the
magistracy" - a system warning that other institutions are doing
surveillance work.
Besides the spying operation, Tavaroli had an important role in
developing the Pirelli business in Romania. He coordinated
negotiations with Romanian authorities to obtain facilities for the
Pirelli factory in the city of Slatina. He was withdrawn from Romania
at the beginning of this year.
Tavaroli is currently under arrest, after Italian judges decided the
evidence against him is sufficient. Other 19 people have been
arrested in the scandal.
