I refill my own cartridges for my large-scale plotters, and inkjets.

I buy the ink in quart sized bottles, and it costs me around $15 per
quart, and when I purchase more then 12 quarts of a time I can get it
for around $10 per quart.

Works out to be $40-$60 per gallon as a bulk purchase.

If the same ink was actually purchased already inside ink cartridges
(not stuff that I refilled) the cost would be about $6000-$7500 per
gallon for the large scale printers, or well over $8000 for the small
desktop inkjet printers.

Bulk feed conversions work well, but are prone to leak, so I prefer
to use high capacity cartridges, and just refill them until the heads
start to foul (at least 25-30+ refills). If I refill at the 25% point
instead of letting them go totally dry I get much better results (45+
refills), and if I use a filtered small gauge needle it makes a big
difference in keeping the heads from fouling (over 60 refills) as the
ink sold in bulk usually has solids in it that foul the cartridge nozzles.
