View Full Version : Win2k SP2 + Softice == Bad News?

Lo all...

What I was wondering, when I installed SP2 on Windows2000 softice suddenly started acting all weird. (The same as it acts with WindowsXP). That is, breakpoints don't always snap, doing a 'p ret' hardly ever snaps (ie, u don't go back into sice and the program just runs as if nothing is wrong).Things like that...

All in all it makes softice almost useless imo. I tried it with softice's ranging from the Dirverstudio 1.5, 2.0, 2.01 and even the newest beta. All with the same result. Anyone else who has noticed this? Or is it just me...

Take care,

D.

Similar things here. Interrupts on API calls didn't work on the single app I tried after SP2.
Window messages also. The wrong ones activated the breakpoint.
The problem might be the wrong symbols though (I still have the SP1 ones).
I'm getting the SP2 symbols now and check it again later.
They are here if you want to get them:

Hmmm, actually I never use(d) those symbols and never had problems before... what's the use of those things exactly?

Cheers,

D.

ah, I see...

Would I have to load just the symbols from the dll's I export (like kernel32.dll, user32.dll) or only the ntoskrnl.exe one.

About the driver remark, only problem I used to have with bad drivers (having a geforce2 mx with detonators myself) was the display of softice. Or total lockups... Now softice comes up just fine, it's just doesn't 'take control' so to say. Also, with SP1 and the latter softices I had no probs at all, it is something new with SP2.

Cheers and take care,

D.

Hmmm, it seems to be a newer build of ntice.sys then the one for xp beta2 (which didn't work either) so I think I'll give it a try... Also coz of the fact my puter is goin unstable as hell so I might need to reinstall newayz

I'll keep y'all posted...

Thank you Thank you!! I've had this problem too. I found a section in the Readme.htm that came w SI saying that the kernal symbols may not load properly for Win 2k builds after 2031. I guess this is the problem. In my case however when I tried doing some of the things it said in the readme, it locked up my mouse. So I tried to dl the Microsoft symbols pack as in the above post. 74 megabytes latter, the install program that came with the sybols program locked up. It also disabled my mouse(i'm using a laptop w some funky mouse drivers). So I just kinda gave in and removed SP2. This freed up 200+ megs from my harddrive. My system is also responding much faster. I think next week I will remove all of Windows. I can't wait to see how fast my system runs them!!!

i keep getting a clicking sound every time there is hard disk access when i have softice loaded and connected to the internet. I run Win2k SP2, but is the problem something non-sp2 releated? btw, im a newbie to this cracking stuff

Hi, are all you guys using the newest beta version of driverstudio? I'm using 2.0.1 and SI freezes w/ sp2
