Hi Kayaker,

Can you be a little bit more detailed about SoftICE-Is-Overheating-My-CPU-While-Debugging-Or-Playing-A-Game?

Hi Code_Inside,

This place should do better for the topic I guess just so we don't mess up what looks like a beta-protection testing thread

The original question was (I think) why does your computer crap out after being in SoftIce for a short period of time, or playing games. Does your computer actually shut down while you're in SI?

I had noticed when playing Quake at a nutso rate with full graphics and weapons blaring that my computer would suddenly shut off. I raised the CPU shutoff temp in BIOS by 5 or 10 degrees to 90'C and it was OK after that. That's all, probably nothing surprising there, just tells me I should install another fan.

I've never had SI shut down on me in that way though, so I'm not sure what might be causing that with you and ?ferret. I'm not real fluent with Windows operating system privileges, but I gather regular Win programs run in Ring 3, SoftIce has a greater control over the system at Ring 0, and I would assume BIOS has a greater privilege yet. So I'm guessing that the BIOS CPU temp monitor would continue to give accurate readings while you're in SoftIce, so shouldn't shut the system down in error.

Maybe you have a non-BIOS temp monitor, or scheduler or timer or something that somehow shuts down the system if it's not receiving feedback while SoftIce is being used? Just guessing here, but that would seem to indicate that at least part of it is running at the same privelege level as SoftIce, else like most Ring 3 programs it should be "blind" to the fact that it's not actually running.

So what exactly is the abnormal SoftIce behaviour you see?

for me it's usually the moment I finally exit SoftIce.....hardboot right when I hit cntrl-d (although occasionally I get an error within Softice and the softice screen freezes and I have to hit the power button to get out (-: )

I don't think I have a monitor, but I do run a bit warm (K6 II processor and a Maxtor HD [Bad combo for heat buildup hehe])

Hi Kayaker, Qferret,

Well let me explain what it does exactly

Let's say if i'm in Win for a couple of hours (say 6,7 hours) there's totally no problem, it runs fine
But when i'm in SoftICE for about 30 minutes (It's not always the same time limit, it differs, sometimes it's already after 5 minutes ) my Computer starts beeping like crazy.
And when i press Ctrl+D (Or whatever shortcut to quit SoftICE ) the beeping stops (sometimes).
If it doesn't stop i need to shutdown/restart my Computer (i think Shutdown is better because of some cooling down ? ).
If i'm playing a game (It always happens in Halflife, Multiplayer) then i can play for a period of time and my Computer starts beeping again
Then i quit to the Main Menu of Halflife and the beeping stops (always).

And another thing, i got sometimes (i think just 1 or 2 times) an Error message when i started up my Computer (in the screen where you can enter the BIOS) it don't remember exactly what it says but it's something like "blah, blah, check your Power Management Setup".
And if i check there i see some temperature thing by the Internal Monitor that gives an Error, something like "60c / 145c [Err]"

Don't blame me if i say something wrong here, because i've got like 15% knowledge about Hardware stuff ;D

P.S. maybe this sounds stupid but i also think it has something to do with the weather
When it's cold i can most of the time debug or play a game longer then when it's hot
Oh and one other thing (Maybe i should quit with that ) i think i smoke to much on my room ;D
heh...

Heya Code_Inside,
>(i think just 1 or 2 times) an Error message >when i started up my Computer (in the screen >where you can enter the BIOS) it don't >remember exactly what it says but it's >something like "blah, blah, check your Power >Management Setup".

Just an idea, this might solve your problem, disabled Power Management in cmos
it might help .I'm not a good troubleshooter but the errors tells you that something configuration about power management.Hope this helps
>maybe this sounds stupid but i also think it >has something to do with the weather sure it is :P

Hi esther,

Ok, i tried to Disable (ignore) the Temperature monitor or something
And i think it works
But...

First i got the "beeping" because something was overheating, but now i don't get the "beeping" anymore but now i also don't know if it's overheating or not?
So then i won't be "alarmed" and maybe all of a sudden the whole building goes in flames
Am i right or wrong?

hi Code_Inside,

Sorry for the late reply.
My monitor differs from yours I don't have a
thermometer with tells me how hot it is.I didn't use
my pc for such long hrs :P

After you disabled this does your debugger or playing
games hangs on win?

The cmos setting in power management that you have
disabled does it have any other options like user define?
If you choose user define you can set it 1 hr on
Doze mode and leave other options untouched.
Below is my erm Main board user guide options
it might be different from yours :P.

Power Mannagement:user define,max saving,min saving

Doze:1min-1hr

The other thing is in the control panel
theres also a option on power management you can turn on
or off the monitor automatically 1min-5hrs but it will
affect the debugging the best option is 5hrs because you
are using it long hrs. I never turn off the harddisk
option though coz it will affect debugging too...

Hope this helps :P

Well don't worry ,it won't flame the whole building your monitor will just blown off

Hi esther,

"After you disabled this does your debugger or playing
games hangs on win?"

No they don't
I haven't got any weird reactions or something, while i'm Debugging or playing a Game

"The cmos setting in power management that you have
disabled does it have any other options like user define?"

Hmm, i haven't seen some option where i can set the time
And the thing in Control Panel, i know those options, but my brother said that i needed to put all those options off, that was better

"Well don't worry ,it won't flame the whole building your monitor will just blown off"

HAHAHA ;D ......................... Damn
Thanks anyway for helping , because i CAN Debug and play a game now no matter how long ;D
