I have been cracking for a while but have only recently been using packed progs. I was having a problem with a prog and needed a dead listing to see if I could sort it out. The prog is Quicksilver from ht*p://quicksilver.skuz.net/. With no experience of packed progs it didn't take me long to unpack it and get a dead listing with WDASM32. There is no serial or anything (the prog is freeware) but I just thought it might help getting newbies started with a simple unpacking exercise.

Hi Timmy, I don't think packed programs are suitable for newbies doesn't matter if it's hard or not. The purpose of these projects is to learn how basic protections work and how to use our tools to reverse them. With a packed program you either use a util to unpack it and than you didn't learn a damn thing, or if you unpack it manualy it involves too many new ideas that newbies should not be confused with just yet.

No probs, I totally understand where you are coming from. I just thought that there are "new" newbies and then there are slightly more experienced newbies etc. and there doesn't seem to be anything with thread specific help for the people that want to progress a little further.

Hi Timmy,

Why don't you post your findings anyway on the Newbies Forum? I'm sure a lot of people would like to get their feet wet with unpacking. You could simply post a few hints or teasers to get them started and if there are any questions, I'm sure they could stay within the same thread so as not to mess up the Board too much.

While there may not be a "thread-specific" forum for more involved RE concepts there's no reason why we can't make the best of it and at least present the information. Then at least those who are interested could benefit from the examples and comments and your good idea won't be lost. The more contributions, feedback and discussions there are the better it is for everyone.

Every little bit helps. Go For It

Cheers,

Kayaker
