Howdy,

The "strainer" has been revived .

Zero, along with some other +members have designed
the "strainer" for 2008.
This is your chance to earn the +.

http://www.Scientific-Hacking.com

I want all of you to participate in this.
It is the chance to excel for yourself and help
to prove that RCE is a legitimate skill and worthy
of recognition and respect.

That site/domain seems to be down at the moment.

Anyway, some history about the "strainers", for those who were not there back in the day:

Nice nostalgia Woodmann.

I tried to access the rev.eng. board and it looks nearly died.
It looks more a denial of service, as the server pings.

Some script kiddie is having fun with his botnet, apparently..

nope, all OK. The server (MySQL) died this night due to a leecher at one of the other websites

I have an "manual" eye on it during the next days.

Thx Wood for the announcement!

Hi,
about an year ago I proposed to revive the + sign, renew that type of unofficial recognition. Almost everyone told me that it would have been a stupid idea, that those times are long gone and so on. I am anyway still convinced that's a nice thing, not just a curiosity. There are several differences with those times, the first of all the 0day scene, nowadays there are so many extremely talented ppl that noone will never know about, they just work behind the scenes. So I am now asking myself which is the meaning of a '+' ? I understand that a certification is a certification and that this is a plus added to attract curious ppl, but a restyling is due..
What's compared to other most recognized certifications like the ethical hacking? An idea could also be honoris causa recognitions..j/k

Do not take this a pure critics, I were already reversing at the + times despite I don't have any plus. Nevertheless I think some sort of regulation from the ground is needed, something not coming from the companies.

Just let me add some main pinpoints:

The +Sign was and will be a non-commercial recognition. We have discussed this with +Sign owners.
It is different to a commercial certification due to the fact that no company recognizes you but the community (other + owners). So honoris causa recognitions should be behind all this
Take it as a challenge. IMO if you see it like a certification it is the wrong way.
It might happen that we build a small but effective community of very good people willing to spread knowledge (one of the +Sign effects!)

I agree with this. What I said: +Sign is full free and non-commercial. The SciHa website (where it is placed) is non-commercial as well (forgive the little ad at the website ). If the community has really a problem with the SciHa website as place for the +Sign, there is no problem to register a specific domain for this.

I take the discussion not as an offense, this is the only way we can make it better

hey,
I too agree its a brilliant idea and its great to carry the legacy
The '+Sign' seemed to fade away with time and this would be a revival
Also its nice to see that it is full free and non-commercial as it has always been

I think it would be great if this could be made more of an official collaboration between the biggest and most active communities in our little "community universe" (which also happen to be the foremost places throughout which the members and descendants of the old Fravia community have scattered), i.e. this place (the Woodmann community), ARTeam and Crackmes.de, and that representatives from all these places could review, discuss and improve the "strainers" before being released, and review/approve submissions together.

I really like this "trinity" of great communities, would love a closer collaboration between them (and this makes an excellent starting point for this, since it is something from our common heritage), and think that together we can be at least as big and central as Fravia back in the day, and carry on the legacy with pride!

Representatives from these communities have now been contacted with further info about this.

I like the idea of joining the efforts, I always wanted to overcome the age of competing teams with no better strategy than spreading their egos instead of their knowledge. Moreover I have a personal view of the rce world evolution that needs such a reaction from us to remain competitive with respect to the companies.
Very good, could be a seed.

Nico:

I believe, at least at the moment, you will find what you seek by going to the site mentioned in Woody's starting Post which references:

http://www.Scientific-Hacking.com

I believe if you go there and register. There is a page at:

http://certification.scientific-hacking.com/

which states:

+Sign
So you want to get the famous +Sign? You believe you are good enough to be one of the best reverse code engineers out there...
To access this item you need to be logged in and to have appropriate permissons.

You might start there.

Nico

Thanks for reviving the "strainer". In days of yore, I spent many days and nights working strainers. Addictive!

Can you please update this thread when the strainer is made available? I still get an error message when trying to access the www.plus-sign.org site.

Thanks!
