Usually I get the generic "I cant do it please help me" request.
There are very few I have replied to. Maybe 4-6 in all the years.

It helps that I dont know shit about anything so it makes it easy to hit the delete button after I read the first 5 words of the PM.

Plus I think the most important aspect of RCE is having a more than basic understanding of what it is you are trying to do.
The old days of "find this jmp and patch/nop" are long gone.

If you cant show that you have even a remote clue as to what you are doing then it just looks like a crack request.

Speaking of crack requests, are there still people who dont know where to go to steal software?

same here.. over the past few weeks i've been inundated with PMs from new forum members and i've actually had to start adding people to my ignore-list (this is after i told them, "please don't msg me directly, post your questions on the forums instead", and they still keep msging me anyway).

Please let us know of any lamers doing this, and we can then ban them instead of all of you having to update your ignore lists.

Well, I don't want anyone banned but this latest was sent the link to this thread, continues to amaze me the people I keep telling, I don't have time to completely reverse FlexLM, shit CrackZ has it all over me on that, as well as those who came before him, but if YOU DON'T MIND BEING A HACK LIKE ME!!, FlexLM can be defeated using even conventional cr@cking techniques, hell I've done it before I recognized it was FlexLM. If persistent enough you can find the vulnerabilities and and put them on index cards or something - you don't need to know the science behind it, besides with the latest versions you pretty much are left no choice but to patch!

well, if you got money to spent, then use any freelance website and post there (as i did once). i once though to post a question here, but i doubt someone will help anyway. thankfully, i found out the solution myself

There is a difference between "I have money" and "I need help".

If you have the money, buy it.
If you need help, ask.

If you dont have any money then you can either learn how to do it yourself or go to one of those places that has the stuff for free.

Oh, as an example of the kind of thing we discuss here, I was looking at a piece of software that has a time limit.
I was wondering if they still use the same tricks from the old days so I took a look at it. They dont so I wanted to see
how they do it nowadays.
I dont need to steal it, it only costs $99.00 and does EXACTLY what I want so I will buy it BUT,
I may ask for help if I REALLY NEED TO KNOW. I wont pay someone to tell me, what will I have learned from that?

Speaking of FUBARed boxes............

This one is a Compaq Presario V5000 series that wont run on any flavor of windows but now runs just fine with Ubuntu.

After 2 days of fucking around methinks there is a hardware/OS conflict.

We shall see if it keeps running longer then 5 minutes which was the most I could get it to run before the Linux OS.

The thing has multiple problems.
I installed 7 on it but it cant do anything because it has no ram. 512 with 382 usable?

The battery wont take a charge. Actually 7 says there is no battery.
USB ports work when they feel like it.

Touchpad gets an attitude at times, although that might just be drivers.

I wonder if someone spilled something on this?

Aw Shit a challenge, Win 7 will run on anything Pentium or higher with at least 1 Gb, memory or so my research says, (all done in the bathroom), working on laptops is a bitch, hell it usually takes a day to figure out how to disassemble it, then try to put it back together - chances are it will never run again.

You are absolutely correct! New heatsink compound on anything with a heatsink, clean thoroughly first with isopropol - the thinnest possible amount reapplied, blow clean the heatsinks, and reinstall, changing out caps,(only if you're brave and have excellent soldering skills), the silver colored tall ones Woody, observe polarity, the base has a unique shape, don't worry about the tantalums, they don't dry out, but I default to my last post.

Ahhhhhhhh.......we think alike .

I checked that tonight and also did a little re-solder job on the power connection going to the MB..........No changes.

Now I'm thinking the AC adapter is heading south AKA hell.

I will bring home a test meter tomorrow and check the power output from the adapter.

As a side note, I took this thing apart by using the Compaq directions.
In only one instance I had to use something to pry a small cover off.
When I got it apart it quite clearly looks as though someone else has had it apart also.
(pry marks on the plastic bezel).

To check my theory I called not Mrs. Woodmann to take a look and she confirmed it.

I am willing to bet this was returned, repaired, and then re-shrink wrapped and sold as new.

I got a utility to check CPU function and while it tested fine. I let it sit idle for a while and watched the meter and the cpu is running 93-100% WHILE IDLE.

Anyone have any ideas why this is happening?

In the meantime I shall search.

I did conduct a test to see how long this thing would run and it will shutdown between 2:45 and 3:15 minutes. This was done over a 2 hour time period. Prolly restarted the damn thing 30 times

I have no idea how I was lucky enough to get Ubuntu installed and have it run for 24 hours and not shut down.

I guess I should never shut this thing off if I ever get it stable again.

there are some toolz for torturing cpu & ram
and the test name is exactly "Torture" let it run for a while
can u plz try it ? u can find it in Everest and some other toolz

I saw similar problems , as i can remember it was due to cpu over heating.
Is the CPU temperature normal ?

I have a disk with two types of cpu torture tools and for the limited time the box runs, I see no problems.

A funny thing I saw last night, the box quit and I looked down and the light on the ac adapter was off.
I played around with the box today and the ac adapter went off three more times.
I have decided to invest $12.45 for a new ac adapter. If this does not cure the problem, the box will be recycled for parts minus the MB.

I have spent a ton of time in the name of learning on this thing.
Sometimes, these things come to a conclusion with no new knowledge gained.

Not ture. The knowledge gained is that there is not always an easy solution to everything and that not everything can always be repaired.



It such situation, I usually derive a great deal of pleasure in "addressing" the "problem" item with a very large hammer. Relieves some of the frustration and "shows it who's really the boss".

Funny thing I've taken out my frustration on obsolete electronics with anything handy, but only if I knew I'd never use it, the knowledge gained by fixing the problem far outweighs the momentary release of frustration, don't know squat about Ubuntu but if the adaptor is the problem then problem solved, my best guess is a shorted battery - next guess is increase pagefile size.

Believe me that there are few more stubborn than I am at attempting to fix items which refuse to work properly. I only resort to "the final solution" when all avenues have failed and I have finally broken down and replaced the object of my attention.

If u r not still buy the adapter , then always keep in mind that (as i know) it's better to buy an adapter with 1 or 2 or more Amper more than original one, for example if original adapter is 15V,2A then buy a 15V,3A or 4A
