First off, I just started with this like ~2 days ago, caught my interest but I've got no clue what I'm doing ;p
I'm supposed to patch 0x49DBA0 with "mov al, 1; retn" [0xB0, 0x01, 0xC3].
i've tryed adding "mov al, 1; retn" to 0049DBA0 in IDA, not getting anywhere from there, though =/
wondering if anyone would be up to explaining this since i'm a complete retard when it comes to reverse engineering =/

Welcome aboard
Imho, one of the most important things is to chose the right tools for your work. IDA is used to analyze a target, not to modify it. For patching you want to consider a good hex editor which can deal with assembly. Check out "Hiew", it's a little oldschool (no graphical UI) but it's one of the best for doing simple patching tasks.

As for targets I trust to be loaded into a debugger I prefer OllyDbg.

Stop cracking and spend a LOT of time with the tools first.... (most have a tutorial somewhere... nowadays, you even have VIDEO tutorials)

PAtching with a debugger will just modify the loaded image, use olly dump to dump the modified image and reconstruct the data structures such as import table etc..

And in a completely useless, non contributing addition to this thread, I would like to inform you that unfortunately, there are no pics of Lena in a bikini, sweating it off in a humid room, cracking and preparing video tuts... *sigh*

There was one a couple of years ago on the ARTeam site, (I understand it WAS NOT disappointing!), but she took it down before I was able to see it - maybe via the Alexis WayBack machine???
