View Full Version : How to upload tools to RCE library?

I uploaded some apps to the RCE lib because they are free, and I got a DL without the full domain URL, just a file name.

See:

http://www.woodmann.com/collaborative/tools/UnSIS
http://www.woodmann.com/collaborative/tools/UnMakeSIS
http://www.woodmann.com/collaborative/tools/Adobe_Mobile_Packager

How do I get the full D/L.. I'm sure they uploaded to the RCE servers because it took quite a while.

dELTA is the Admin who usually moderates the RCE Libraries. I suspect they are awaiting moderation.

Thanks.

But what do I have to do now?
I mean do the files stay unlinked?! or will delta link up the files on the library wiki too when he approves of the uploads?

thanks

Hi

Thanks for the contributions. I checked it out and it seems the files were never uploaded to the server, so even if we fix the link, there's nothing to link to!

Please if you could, try to reupload the files. I think you should see a large button at the bottom of each entry "Click this button to instantly update..."

On the ensuing edit page, under 'Tool binaries/source:' panel it should say
"Only free and hard-to-come-by tools can be uploaded here, otherwise just link to official D/L location!" and there should be a Choose button.

Try reuploading the file through that. You might also want to erase the entry for "Direct D/L URL:"
For a locally archived file, the entry will be automatically generated when it is uploaded.

I'm not sure exactly what happened. Remember only zip/rar files are accepted, I see that the UnmakeSIS you tried to upload was an exe.

Try it with one entry, if successful you should immediately see the edited result as:
Direct D/L link: Locally archived copy
with the correct link.

If you still have problems, wait and let dELTA check it out as soon as he gets a chance.

Cheers,
Kayaker

Hi Kayaker!!

Thanks very much, your ideas worked out. My apps are online now

Okay, so here's the guide:

1. Click on a category
2. Click the button at the bottom .. "add tool to this category"
3. Type the details of your tool, optionally add a screenshot, but DO NOT choose a file to upload if you want it uploaded to RCE servers
4. When your tool is online and you come to its page, click on the "instantly edit this tool"
5. Now choose your file to be uploaded in the "Tool binaries/source" field
6. Choose "Submit edited info" to begin upload
7. WAIT PATIENTLY!
8. When its uploaded you will be redirected to the tool page
9. You should see a link "Locally hosted copy" on your tool's page
10. You can do a test download to check if everythings ok

Hope that helps!

Heheh. "Wait Patiently" - you uploaded 12.4Mb, so yeah, that will naturally take a little while Fortunately downloading from the server will take less time.

Everything looks good now, thanks.

Uploading files at the same time as submitting the entry works equally well, the problem was most likely just that you tried to upload an illegal file type (.exe) to begin with, as Kayaker said. Thanks for your contributions either way.

Hi dELTA,

Thanks for the positive response

But hell yea, I tried to upload 2 RARs and 1 EXE. All of them showed the same symptoms. Let me detail it down so you could fix it if its a general failure (and not a local issue)

1. Browser is Palemoon (port of Firefox 3) on Windows 7
2. When you choose a file to upload with all tool info filled in, and press Submit it starts uploading
3. After upload you get the D/L link textbox filled with the name of the file on your server (only the name ... eg "MyApp_2010-01-02_blabla.rar"
4. Nothing happens! It does not redirect to the completed tool page
5. You press Submit a 2nd time and it tells you "you cannot choose a D/L link AND a file to upload (because the upload textbox still has the file in it)
6. You cannot proceed because you want the newly filled in D/L and you DON'T want to reupload
7. Opening a new "submit a tool" page allows you to submit with all info, of course this time you don't choose a file to upload, and it correctly redirects to the now-online tool page

That's exactly what happened thrice over for me. I could do it again (boring!) but basically thats how to reproduce what I'm facing.

Lemme know if you face the same issues.

Ok, very strange. The upload function on the submit form has never failed me at least. Maybe there was connection problems due to the size of the files? As you say (and as the warning on submit says), you have to wait patiently, and not press the submit button again etc.

Oh well, just let us know if anyone else experiences any such problems anyway.

No dude, my files were small. One was some 50 K!

And I waited while it uploaded, and as i said before, after upload, it would fill in the filepath into the D/L textbox and thats it. Nothing more. Pressing submit again would result in the error. Because the textbox got the filename I assumed that it uploaded well. Because the textbox would take a long time to get filled .. (after the form was submitted and the file was uploaded)

Very strange, I will try to take a look myself.
