View Full Version : Problems with board?

I usually check in every day from work at around 8am California time and later from home at 6pm. During the last week, my connections in the morning have been *unusually* slow - to the point of taking minutes to retrieve a message, if it retrieves at all. No problem in the evening.
Wondering if there are any stats showing the board usage/peak times etc. Overall connections to most other sites are fine. The RCE mb has been fine up until about a week ago.
Anyone having the same issues?

thanx,
vgb

It's now 1:15pm California time and no trouble at all.
Must just be peak traffic on the server

Yes I had it also, impossible for me to maintain it a gmt 12h-18h,
I guess it's the server that causes the problem but I'll check the mb
error logs.
I'll ask disavowed if he can check this and report here.

just to inform everybody, we suffered a denial of service (actually a brute-force guess attack on a disavowed.net challenge) on monday. i've banned the ip mask from accessing the disavowed.net challenges, and emailed the assumed attacker with a warning

I was the one that did the brute-force guessing. I misinterpreted one of the clues on the discussion board and thought that was what I was supposed to do; I apologize for any trouble it may have caused.

I had, however, trouble connecting to the messageboard part of the site (but not the disavowed challenge) for several days before I started the guessing program; I assumed it was a problem with this part of the site.

I should have checked that such an action was permissable; again, I apologize for any trouble.

I find that I regularly have problems trying to access the board (in fact any of the boards on the woodman server). The problem appears to be in the CGI server, as pinging www.woodman.com from the UK while waiting for a download gives about 160ms times. Any time after about midday GMT causes timeouts.

I have regularly had problems accessing the board at one time or another for almost as long as it is up. However, the connection has not been that slow all the time, sometimes it seems to be back to normal.
I guessed it was due to the proxies I use or the overall usage of the net, but there might be other problems as well.
I don't know if the problems only arise after 12:00 h (UTC), but that might be true.

checked the logs and saw that nothing wrong happened since
the 8/2/2001, check the routers and bottlenecks.
The daily logs are normal since this date, no attacks or bruteforcings.

Hi

I may have given a slightly wrong impression due to the wording of my message.

What happens is that during the UK morning I can access all the boards OK, but after about Midday GMT it is almost impossible to view any individual threads on any of the boards, although the thread index will show (sometimes quite slowly).

While waiting for a message thread to display (even if the thread times out in my browser) I can still ping the woodman URL with echo times of around 160mS. This leads me to believe it is the CGI engine within the woodman server that gets loaded down and causes the time outs in displaying pages.

That said I had very little problem opening this thread just now. Please treat this as a heads up on a possible problem. Otherwise the board is great (although I prefer the Newbies board colour scheme - it is easier to read)
