View Full Version : Does anyone know what happened to reverse-engineering.net?

I just tried to connect to community.reverse-engineering.net and I was prompted with this:

Quote:

This website has been forced to get closed. Sorry for this. Good Bye.

I don't know why, but that makes me shiver
I hope it's not another attempt of censorship from the Germans (was the board hosted in Germany?). It would fit perfectly into the bad political behavior here in good old Germany.

edit: and even Binary Auditor:

Quote:

Website taken down for a while. Thinking how to proceed with all this... if I proceed...

edit2: a WHOIS lookup shows that the site was indeed hosted in Germany - of all things at 1&1 Internet AG <- not a good choice for stuff like that (actually not a good choice at all)

I don't know.. but that's never a good thing to see on a website, containing so much information. But I see this as not for the best. Someone should do 'something'.

I've been MSGing Zero to know more.

Yes the board was hosted in Germany and all of you knows that laws are getting more strict each year for euro lurkers...

As for 1&1 and things, I guess it's primarily because of the budget. I'm sure he did all was possible to avoid this. I just hope is not into legal troubles.

The information isn't lost yet.

I really hope that, too.

You're right. Laws are getting awfully strict here: HADOPI, data retention, three-strikes-model and all this shit - it makes me wanna puke.

Wow I hope that Zero has backups and maybe Woodmann would be so kind as to host them here

If there's anything I can do to help, please let me know. The Binary Auditor pages and modules, IMHO, were phenomenal and were good for newbies and experienced reversers. The forum was a similarly great resource that brought crackmes.de and binary-auditing.com visitors to a shared community. It's really a shame to see the defeatism in the messages, especially in on the Binary Auditor page . I really want to give back to something that has really helped me.

Please, don't hesitate to contact me.

I would agree with dugg, but the way has to be opened, and the path needs clearing.

Silkut's tracks tell of Zeros company..this was my seed to my thoughts set here...

The question: could a (P)LLC be made? It would be great sight to see a operable student and community environment in 1 website even if they where separated to keep with current state and I know what I say really has no meaning, but I do read between the lines to see 'philisophies' handed down at inception to the founder, I do not detract from that 'code', I merely say appending it to 'help' is good...(that would be lost to some )(I give clue.. 'the self proclaimed A$$h0l3 made sure we where aware of that' along with the shirts..)the only problem is I cant tell if a US based llc can 'legally' partner or parent a Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung.(good ol wiki and trying to find comparitives in other countries...

Well now..........

It certainly is possible. Once a dream of a man I knew .

Anything is possible if one is willing to fore go conventional thinking
and do the things others dare not.

It is the only way such things happen. Damn the torpedoes.

If the path darkens and fades from view. Drink of yourself no further, lest you be wrapped in the mists of self doubt, and woven into what is naught but your fears, for along the path that you walk;it wil never be the brightest day, or the darkest night, it will be the red hues of morning and pieces both sides everywhere. written By BanMe

I don't know about that one.. As it isnt directed towards anyone that just for myself from myself to myself. re written 12 times in place from sad to happy to nostaligic to the current incantation..lol.. I find myself asking random question to myself and see where it leads..

Btw any news?

Well then.. I will 'form the plan of action'..a plan of 'using' "you people" to attack this 'issue' just to see what happens. So in this 'plan' we need the modules (as binary auditing was the most important part in my view.) and the videos hopefully can be dug out..I dont have the newer MODULES(if someone would upload them that would be nice)(As far as I see I cant find it in crctl or crckl...)at least temporarily sounds feasible(is it?). I got the original release and not all the modules..but I will dig them out..at the word.

Darkelf

I second that.
I guess Silkut (as a moderator at reverse-engineering.net) can obtain all the modules. Imho the stuff offered at Binary Auditor is way too valuable to get lost. I really hope there is a way to save it.

AttonRand

OK, that way we might obtain all binary auditor modules (would be nice to get a copy of the forum too).
However i am more interested to what happened to Zero... he didn't replied to this post yet nor we know if he would be interested to continue his community.

If i can help to support future projects please let me know.

BanMe

Very true AttonRand.. But a description of what has happened is needed to proceed further, without the facts we try to draw conclusions and usually (hopefully) they are wrong, but there has to be mitigating factors that come into play(be they content or contributor based.), for 'all' things that 'can' and usually do go wrong, if this is not the case, situations such this will happen.

I hope this is not a event horizon to which we cannot come back from in the 'broader' aspect..

ps attonrand the solve to the question if Zero wants to continue his community is on his page.. the word 'forced' doesn't infer 'want'...

this waiting is killin me.. 2 yays..0 nays.. move forward or wait idle...anyone else?

I'm definitely a 'yay'

I'm pretty sure I have a copy of the modules. As I moved through them, I kept (hopefully all of) the original binaries. I'm almost positive I saved the archive but I will have to look around. Did Zero ever release the next package? My set only goes to 34 on the "copy protection analysis" section. I know he had listed 70 or so but he didn't update the archive as far as I had seen.

pHi1t3r
January 25th, 2011, 17:34
I think I found the latest copy of them...

I know he posted that the copy protection section had over 70 excercises but I never saw the zip get updated to that. When I downloaded the latest zip, this was the one I got.

Let me know what you want me to do with it. I can't attach it to this post.

A name that befits you..glad to see you not 'only' are willing to say what you think is right, but you are also willing to do something about it.

3 yays..0 nays and the Modules found..So unless you just think your opinion is 'known', buck the fuck up, and say something..3 is not enough to count as a community decision. I guess Woodmann and Delta and JMI would have to be the final decider in this and maybe things transpire that I am unaware of but if it looks like a duck, quacks like one, shot it first and inspect it later.o0

I think one of the most important thing that was lost as far as the modules were concerned was the body of crackmes that were still unposted. Combined with the r-e.net forums, a large piece of the community left with the sites.
I wonder if it would be appropriate to send him an e-mail. I know Zero is a professor in Germany and a quick google hit brings you to http://thorsten.techfak.uni-bielefeld.de/ ("http://thorsten.techfak.uni-bielefeld.de/"). I know binary auditor and DVL (which also went down) have twitter accounts but contacting him through that might be a shot in the dark.

Should I post the modules that I have in the CRCEKL?

Thanks for the feedback BanMe. I said in a previous post that I would like to help and I meant it. I have worked my way through a lot of the b-a modules. If you need someone to bounce ideas off of (especially the c++ one as I'm significantly better at C than asm), feel free to PM me.

I just uploaded it. If anyone has a more recent archive or something to add, all suggestions or updates are welcome. I'm really curious as to the situation at hand. I keep running into websites that have been taken down like DVL and codebreakers journal. Now I can see why he seemed a little stressed out on his most recent blog posts.

Howdy,

DVL was Zero's project also.

And no, I have not from him yet.
