Hey guys. Relaxing to some nice music, smoking herbal remedies, and a question on my mind.

So apparently there is copy protection/rip protection on dvds and some cds, but how does that even work/matter? If you can put the dvd in your computer to watch the movie, access that data in a movie player, why couldn't you access the data to copy it? It really makes no sense at all to me! It seems like bypassing such a thing (since you can watch it you can record it) would be so simple that it'd be impossible to do something like copy protection.

In regards to DVDs
Commercial protections are/were rather easy to bypass.
It's the custom or obscure ones that create problems.

The protection is/was two fold,
#1 is country based. Buy a dvd in Asia and try to play
it in North America. It wont. Strip that away and then
you have #2, the actual encryption that prevents copying.

The softwares to rip these are constantly evolving.
I am sure there is not a commercial made dvd
that cant be ripped.

While it is simple enough to actually record the video
as it plays on your computer, it takes considerable time
and effort to get it to display properly on a TV screen
once it has been burned to a dvd and played in a run
of the mill bought at the electronics store player.

Ripping audio CDs is pointless. Someone has already done
it. All you need to do is find it. If it takes longer than
2 minutes, you best rip them yourself.

What was that old saying? Something like; "If it runs, it can be..."? Reversers' prerequisite to all protections. Heh?

You cant reverse your life. You have already lived it.

You have a point in there. However, unfortunately, life is not something static as code. Once lived, every line of it changes both backward and forward starting from the very line where you are at, at any given moment.

Anyway, had I been capable of reversing something about my life, I'd have copied the code from my dry&hard bones and pasted it to another auxiliary HW device that is soft as jelly.

going back to topic, for the audio CDs, itunes will automatically rip your audio cd and copy all the songs to the itunes library. So far it has done that with every music CD I have. It automatically detects the audio CD and ask you if you want to copy them.

For movies, including BlueRay format, like woodman said, there are a lot of commercial software out there that will do it without much of a fuss. And the good thing is that because they are commercial software, if something didn't work at first, you just have to wait until a patch is issued and it usually fixes the problem.
