Hi.
Maybe somebody has the solution to the following problem or can supply some Softice info.
Running Win2K Pro Workstation, updated with SP1 and later updated with SP2 (a version just before the final SP2). Softice is set up to run in Manual mode.
All was well until I got the final SP2 and decided to install it.
I started by uninstalling the older SP2.
Major mistake!!! Don't do it.
It uninstalled, Win2K rebooted and got stuck on the logon popup.
"The system cannot log you on because the Domain PIII-600 is not available" (PIII-600 is my computer's name. It's set up in a Workgroup and not a Domain).
No way to get around it. Safe mode, DOS mode or whatever.
A search for solutions, took me to MS's Knowledge Base.
According to them, the problem has to do with mixed Security modules (rsaenh.dll) (and schannel.dll according to some other link). (It looks more like the system changed from Workstation to Server somehow).
You're supposed to run the Maintenance console (that's the name?) and replace these files.
In my system it doesn't run. It complains that txtsetup.sif is corrupt or missing.
It's not. It's the one from SP1.
So now what? The system identifies itself as Win2K with SP2Free and most of the files are from SP1 or original.
Replacing these 2 files manually (booting with Win9 didn't help. I still have some other files from SP2 that might conflict. And the Registry still has SP2 stuff in it.
1) Any way to get around the logon screen?
2) Any way to reinstall SP2 pre-final again? (that should match things up).
3) Does somebody know or can compare the registry to see what's the difference between Softice running in Manual mode versus in Boot-up mode. Maybe I can hex edit the change and bring Softice up during logon, bypass it and see what happens.
Thanks in advance for any ideas.
