just vote to test the poll, this will be deleted later, especially if "no" is too numerous

I'm all for democracy, but is a sample of 3 votes really representative ?

Anyway, you asked for opinions, heres mine..

I thought ultraBoard was naff but tolerable. This forum is now looking more akin to a gamers forum than anything of serious discussion:

You need to create an account just to post a message (have your life story handy when you sign up). Ballache navigation, private messaging, online visitor lists etc.. why is this tiresome stuff needed ? I wonder how many people this puts off; I dont think I've seen a single person on this forum who used to frequent it before it went sugar and spice (with ultraboard).

Hmm, whats next...

Avatars ? The servers struggling for bandwidth, so why allow attachments and infinitely useless graphics in posts ? an average thread with 10 replies could mean as much as 200k of GIF. Fine, this wont slow the server noticeably, but it never hurts to be lean. As for attachments, private webspace is cheaper than muck.

So we have an all singing all dancing messageboard, whoopee. But it also makes it a pain to access the actual thing you came here to look at: The content.

Im wondering If im the only old cynic who cant be done with these sorts of gimmicks. This board is full of people interested in reversing (and therefore implcitly interested in coding). Why not ditch this junk and build a board which actually functions as a decent forum ? Or at least reopen the poll if only to prove im on my own with this one ;-)

On a hiding to nowhere..
Carpathia

maybe all the possibilities of this places can divert some real serious reversers from their actual duty on such a place.

All those smileys and avatars are kind of unproductive and bandwidth consuming, but they're here also to bring a good ambiance, and make the threads without sadness at all.

I needed an easy to install, fast and secure for backups messageboard, you know about the problems I had in the past with servers closing up our accounts and other moskitoes biting the place every day, so this place feels good to me.

I'm not a perl wizard, and can't have the time to code a forum myself on c cgi, so the win32 asm forum used the same and what's the problem ?

tsehp

Howdy,
Thank's Carpathia, I wish everyone would post some comments about what they like and what they don't like.

I dont particularly like to have to log in to post a comment, we must be getting spoiled :P
As for the rest of the stuff, I have it all shut off in my browser. I also only want the content.

I like this board because it's fast and really easy to back up. It was something we did quick in a hurry. Perhaps after we resolve our bandwidth/backbone problems we can start tweaking things. Until they finish server upgrades I won't know what is causing the problems.

People, If you hate this board speak up, you won't hurt my feelings. Tell me what you want.

Peace, Woodmann

Greets to all,

I'll keep this short and sweet since I might descend into uncontrollable ranting, and that might not be in tune with the 'good ambience' being maintained around here.

I personally don't care about the colours / fantastic features / avatars / gif's / modes / e-mail notification / 50 varieties of emoticons / and 1001 all singing/all dancing bloody options, I just want a flipping board I can post on, that doesn't take hours to login and hours to load because of useless trimmings. Like Carpathia I'm also not amazingly keen on the 'please insert your life story' required to register (but I'll accept that as a necessary evil even though it probably discourages a few people from bothering).

Actually I didn't really think much of UB, I just got pissed off with it forgetting I was logged in on some of the forums and thinking I was on the others, didn't enjoy having to reload the main page again to login after perusing the posts either, thats just me though, I like to peruse, post and go, not spend hours with a system designed to frustrate me ;-).

I take the point about ease of setup. No-one's offering to write anything better after all.....guess we'll have to live with it, but I demand my right to vote NO! ;-).

A final point, one which I feel is the most important since it was touched on by Carpathia & Woodmann. Like them, I come here for the content ONLY, what I really want is a forum sans gimmicks and avec content.....quality content, lucid intelligent posts or questions that I want to read ..... instead what I appear to have is a fractional collection of 5 message boards with 1 or 2 posts on each every few days and more gifs/emoticons than one can shake a proverbial stick at ;-).

Regards and some.....

CrackZ (Official Cynical Bastard).

Well there you go,

Peace and Harmony to everybody.

When I came accross this post yesterday evening, about five minutes after Carpathia made it, I wanted to reply at once after having read it. I push the onto post reply and started to write. But more then a "Hello Carpathia" came not into my mind. I knew I wanted to write something, but I knew not what and decided to go to sleeping and to think about it the next day. I could not sleep since I knew Carpathia was right with what he said about the board. The old one looked more simple and had none of the many advanced functions this one has, but it was more related to the topic of this forum. I switched of of the private messaging, buddy list, and many more things when I registered, but I knew not why. My mind said me to do this. Now I know why. If I want a warm, userfriedly and helpful program I buy Windows, Office, CorelDraw and such things. But I chose the cold user interface of SoftICE, Turbo Debugger, Norton Commander and the DOS command line. So it is with the board. You're pleased to have such a great thing like the new board, but when you remember the old board, you notice that nothing important was missing. It used smilies, it had UB-Code instead of vB-Code, you could use [IMG] too. I know the loading problems are chaused by the server, not by the board, but if you've 20kb of text and 200kb of pictures, it may effect the bandwidth and the content. I like the new colors. They look better than the old ones, but it's only a personal feeling how something is looking good and how something is looking bad.

Peace and Harmony

Sorry, but something went wrong when posting. I had much problems when trying to access the board, so I think I aborted the posting when I thought the connection was dead, but the board actually did the post, but I didn't notice and did it once again.

Hi Everyone,

I'll drop in too

Well i like the Board, i don't care about the fancy colours or the numerous options, but if the Board will become unstable because of this then why not simply remove this stuff?
After all the content is ofcourse the most important

Ok this was my little speech hehe

What was unknown for non administrators :
ultraboard is written in perl, old script language and not previously made to exploit mysql at full rank, so the script took too much cpu time on previous host, and we were finally thrown out.

I made a last backup, ultraboard said : backup complete, then I tried to upload the whole post's database to this host, and I realised that all the rce forum was gone. Thank you again ultraboard, but the lucky step was that they finally managed to retrieve a last tape backup, containing the precious posts, and I have to reformat them all.

And finally ub is not supported anymore, the contacts doesn't respond, so we had no choice to choose this script.

when we don't have bandwidth problems, it's rocking tremendous fast, backups takes only 5 minutes, it's just to me a pleasure to maintain.

So, sure there's a lot of features, but if you don't like them, thinking they are too cosmetic, well turn them out.

my goal : maintain the database at all cost
woodmann's : find a host/server to host the whole thing

Hello tsehp !

I don't know what script language is used in UB.
I don't know what script language is used in vB.
I don't know anything about these languages.
I don't know how to backup these boards.
I don't know how to restore them.
I don't know how much CPU time they need.
I don't know how to use all their features.

I don't know anything about these things.

But why I'm here?

I think to learn.
I think to teach.
I think to get knowledge.
I think to share knowledge.

Hiya,

Thanks for all your work +Tsehp and Woodman. We all owe you guys one Just wanted to say I like the format of the new board, in spite of its extra features. The avatar feature is actually pretty cool (still working on finding a good one though ). I'd have to agree with ArthaXerXes that aesthetics and functionality should go hand in hand wherever possible.

Regards,
Clandestiny

PS. +Tsehp, a word of thanks for all your hard work on Revirgin. Its an awesome tool! Just recently had my first chance to try it on an Asprotected app (my first ever go at Asp, btw)

hi clandestinity, good to hear you back.
revirgin is still in dev and far to be finished, I'm still working on the tracer for it to manage to execute as much as possible protection schemes, I'm actually fixing a te-lock problem discovered by spekkel.

Woodmann bought us a server we'll soon be installing all the stuff on it, the difference will soon be amazing, we'll have much more bandwidth + space. we had to do this choice, as long as visits rised from 4000-500 / day from beginning of the year up to 1300 visits / day actually. We gathered people coming from other closed sites. Just like suddendischarge, actually closed, I made them an offer to host them but no response

i love the colours much more aesthetically (no spell checker yet hehe) pleasing. the ability to turn off the sometimes annoying nsmilies is kewl, it does take a fair bit of my slow slow slow modem bandwidth to get going, but that may be due to the messed up server problems aswell...

some of the abilited options are good, and the login before post thing, probably discourages more lamers and crack requesters than knowledge seeking newbies/hardcore crackers.

all-in-all a nice effort
