I believe that I downloaded most, if not all of the discompress site before it "went off the air." Perhaps +Splaj would have something to say about distributing the set. If he doesn't object, I'm sure I could upload them somewhere if somebody has a spot. I'll check my HD and see how big a file it might take.

+Splaj has given his blessing for distribution of the zip file from discompress.com and has asked if I have two additional tuts that he published. I'll check to make sure I have a "full set", but I need some place to upload them. I'm not sure, but don't think I can make a 1Mg+ attachment here.
Anyway, give me a day or too to get organized. Then we'll get it done. The zip file actually gives the "full" look and feel of the original web site, with operating links to the various pages and materials.

Just an update on the progress of providing an upload of the discompress site. I've located the draft essay on C.V. 3.1 that +Splaj said he would like included, but have not located his draft tut on Awave Studio 7.3. I've asked +SplAj if he would send it but if anyone downloaded it from the thread here in June before it was removed you can send me a PM and I'll give you an e-mail address to send it along so it can be included. I've also asked +Splaj if he would like to include something he mentioned about "html unencrypted" that I don't recall seeing anywhere.
With additions, the file will be slightly over 1 Mg so I will still need someplace to upload it if many people want to download it. I've already received some PM requests and will follow-up as soon as I determine whether I can add those additional files.
Up to the minute-late breaking news:
Woodmann has kindly offered space to upload the discompress materials as soon as I can finish trying to track down those last materials I mentioned.

And so you'll know what's in this zip, it includes the tutes on unpacking pecompact 133; petit 2.2; Aspack 1083; Aspack 2.1; and VBox 4.1.
And for those of you who don't want to wait for the full upload of the discompress site, you will find +SplAj's latest two tuts as zip attachments here:

Hello to all who are following this thread:
I have been working to co-ordinate with +SplAj and Woodmann the uploading of the former Discompress Site and wanted to figure out the best way to include the two new essays by +SplAj on Awave Studio and CommView 3.1, but I didn't want to make any changes to the original work to identify the two new essays without +SplAj's express request that I do so. During the discussion of how to handle this +SplAj has advised that he has more material that was on the site that is not in the zip file that was available when I downloaded it.
However +SplAj advised that he is extremely busy at the moment and asked for a few weeks to complete his current backlog before addressing this issue. Sometimes real life interfers with reversing and we will all just have to wait a short while until he has the available time to feed our hunger for his knowledge and experience.
As the previous posts have indicated, the essays from the site and his two new essays on Awave Studio and CV 3.1 are available here now. And to keep your interest up and as a reward for patience I am attaching +SplAj's page from the site on "signature bytes."
If you read the two new essays you will see +SplAj used signature bytes to locate the OEP of these asprotected targets. The reason this is important, as explained in the essays, is that asprotect has figured out how to slow down the the /tracex function and this is an alternative method to locate the OEP without waiting for the slowed down process to work. This is a useful concept for us to study, learn, and apply, but don't forget that some of the protectors also read these pages (hello Alexey) and try to find ways to get around the methods that are developed to defeat their latest tricks. If they didn't make changes, eventually we would have nothing interesting to try to reverse.
We have to keep studying, learning and investigating. Be sure to check out the recent threads involving very recent changes discovered in asprotect, particularily about re-re-directed import table entries and self modifying code.
Regards.

Hi guys
thnks for your request and patience. JMI is one of those real rare nice guys :-D
As I said to him I am too buzy to fart right now. BUT I still have the orginal folder intact on my crashed & burned notebook,i.e. fuxed network card, fuxed screen (unless I punch it )and fuxed battery
Then I need to check the integrity of the files.
Anyway it was a lame attempt to get ppl started on the road to defeating packers/protectors/cryptors.......and actually the best way is to learn the PE header a bit, pay y0da for LordPE Armaggedon, get an IAT rebuilder (u know) and pack/protect/crypt NOTEPAD.EXE and use that as a target
That's it, I'm around if anyone has Q's.......5 or 10 mins a day.
BTW today i learned 'mate' meant a queer pufta in some parts of the world, oh ummm. .....Oh and WinNT4 PC cannot drill down more than 6 levels of directory on a shared Win2K PC :-( Now I just fuxed the office network by installing Win2K....nobody can see their shared files....duh.....back to work. CYA. Oh, merry xmas to all RCE ....blah blah
Who wants to be a millionaire ?

+SplAj asked for some more time, when he is not too busy to fart, to get his sh*t together. I, for one, will give the man some room until he's ready to fart. hehe.

Imagine having to try to cook holiday meals wearing that old WWI gas mask, waiting for the big event. Besides, as he said, he's been "fixing" the office network.
Enough of this fun, I'd better get Christmas shopping. Put it off as long as I could.
Best wishes to the RCE world and hopes for a more peaceful new year for all.
Regards.
