I haven't used softice in a while, and can't remember how to get breakpoints to work. You need to set them up for a specific program don't you? How do you get softice to debug that program?
Just starting softice and setting bpx messageboxa didnt do much of anything, so i guess it needs to have scope on that program.
Matthew.

The rude response would be "rtfm."
The polite response would be that reading and/or re-reading the manual would be a good idea. Also using the search button at the top of the forums would get information about breakpoints. There are also articles that could be found by a google search using "softice+breakpoints". Just a gentle reminder that learning where and how to look is one of the most helpful things you can learn about reversing.
I'm attaching an article by Rhayader that explains breakpoints in softice that have conditional statements which cause the program to break and display the specific portion of the API that you might be interested in. It also would be helpful to review some of the API's that are valuable for reversing. Again check the search button for previous threads on this issue.
Also check out the +sandman's site which has several tutorials on softice.
Good luck.

Kind of aside from the point but everytime a newbie asks a basic question he gets pounded. Not everyone is as good as figuring things out or finding things as everyone else. JMI did a good job by pleading for him to try other means to avoid these questions but he did answer the question. That's what counts. I hope more people follow JMI's example.

I just used the search button at the top of the forum and reviewed a few of the past posts on this subject and was reminded of a good site reference made by CoDe_InSiDe back in August of this year to http://c4nfaq.cjb.net.
It has frequently asked questions about how to set up and use softice and I think this is where I got the menu set up details for choosing to boot into sice and windows or just windows that I described in a recent thread on the newbie forum.
Certainly worth checking out if you need a refresher on the basics of softice, and pass through with a thanks to Carpathia for the effort of maintaining the site for those of us who are trying to get up to speed.

Hi JMI,
Way to go! Provide the correct answer (read the manual) and then get the newbe on his way by giving him what he needs to know. I like your style.
