Hi!

I've encountered this app that should be able to unerase deleted files (http://www.winternals.com/) Tried looking for serial/crack and found a serial. But there is no place to enter it. The docs in the proggy says that after first run the window will popup asking for license data. No such window ever appears - even after setting date few years ahead. So I ran IDA and found that the dialog is there in the program and all other usual stuff as links to registry, strings, ... But couldn't find the way to activate the dialog. Can anyone help me out? Thanx a lot.

If anyone helped you, they would be just as guilty of using pirated software as you.

What I want to do is to try the software. Right now it only lists files that could be unerased. I am wondering whether the code for unerasing is actualy there or not and if so, how to activate it.

All (or almost all) actions and tutorials in this forum could be taken the way you described it - stealing software. Be that kind and don't be rude. There are other ways to share your (wrong) opinion with others.

Best regards

Interesting order of sentences...

You're asking how to use a serial you searched for and then found online so you don't have to contact the author to pay for your own. You're not looking for help in your own efforts to understand and reverse the app. How is this different from asking how to run some crack you found online?

You just want the free app - via crack or serial - not the understanding. If the dialog had popped you wouldn't have even run IDA.

And yet there are no links to warez sites or to help files for people who only want to search for, download and then apply cracks/serials.

Why even install IDA if you're not interested in what all other usual stuff does and how it does it?

I maybe didn't describe the situation quite good.

When you install the application it only shows the interface. When you try to unerase any file it says that this is the trial version, blah, blah, blah. So I wanted to try out (and maybe buy) and do it quickly. That's why I searched for serial.

OK, I tried to use my knowledge and find the activation. I found the dialog, I found some routines but no way to activate them. Here's where I'm searching for help - where to search and for what. If you don't wanna help, do not. This is not about using other's serial, it's about analyzing the code.

I've been helping in this forum with some java protection/decryption(http://www.woodmann.net/forum/showthread.php?threadid=1692) and noone was accusing anyone of things you guys did. What was the difference???

Ok. People on the board can be narrow minded and dumb sometimes so ignore them. You are asking a reversing question. You are asking how to find out how to activate a dialog. Who cares what your end means are dont tell us about trials buying stealing whatever we dont care. Why people have responded and said that they do I dont know. Ignore them you asked a perfectly good reversing question. You did not ask for a serial you asked for a method to figure out where to enter it.

I suggest you get a resource viewer ResHack 3.3 is a great one. Then open your target and view things like the menu to see if there are other menu items hidden or what not. Check for accelerator tables to see if theres a shortcut key. Other than that you could use IDA to find where the registration dialog is loaded from and see what triggers that.

Crack request is a crack request.

To license the software for the purpose of using it, trying it, doing anything other than conforming to the shareware, evaluation license, is steeling and has nothing to do with understanding. This is exactly what was the big issue on this board a few months ago. This sort of shit will get it closed.

If people want to know how to register something, then they are not asking about understanding.

for pointing me where to start. Maybe I should state it more clearly that I want to find how to activate that dialog. I found some triggers but failed to understand them.

Did someone ever blame you that you want to steal something just because you're trying to find how it works?

Thanx Snatch for pointing me to the hidden menus (there don't seem to be any) and accelerator tables. I'll check it more and try to understand it better (I'm better with Java).

Really? Just so happens Reshack is freeware. Of course that doesn't mean it won't be on the chopping block too...
