View Full Version : Which OS to learn on?

I'm just starting out on my quest to understand what it is that most of you already know. I've been through one tutorial and I learned so much as I went through it that I want to get in even deeper.

The tutorial that I did go through did not use SoftIce although it mentioned it. After downloading v4.05 from several places, I finally realized (after visiting this board) that I wasn't going to be able to make it work on XP.

I have a spare computer, and I have no problems blowing it out and putting any OS on it. My question is, "which OS would be best to put on it?" I've seen a few messages posted on here that leads me to believe that 98/ME/2000/NT/etc... use different methods to accomplish different tasks at times. I have copies of every OS (I believe). But, I don't want to cause myself too much frustration by putting one on that isn't the best.

Anyway, I'm rambling. For tonight I'm going to put ME on the system, but if any of you have any recommendations, I'd highly appreciate the feedback!

Thanks!

Windows 98... the easyiest choice i would say, lots of tutorials are written on win 98....

Win Me is bad, either win 98se or 2K Pro SP2 but i definitely go for win98...

Hi there:

Like binh81 said Win98 is the way to go if you really want to learn stuff. Of course, if you're experienced (like some wizards here) you could try Win2K. It is more stable.

Win98 is much more open (in terms of memory accesses and stuff like that) but less forgiving. Be prepared to reboot "n" no. of times during a unpacking session ;-)

Win2K is more forgiving but harder to place breakpoints etc.

Esp. SuperBPM is the *WAY* to go on Win98. There is no such equiv. on Win2K, unless u write one <grin>

I'll take your words for it. I'm about to start loading it as soon as this thing finishes formatting.

Any good solutions to speeding up old computers.... j/k

Thanks again! You just saved me from a wasted ME install......
