Greetings everybody,

I do know that this is way off topic but I believe that in this forum there must be a few who know the solution to my problem.

I get spammed recently (well, for two weeks now) by a whole bunch of fscked up internet pron spammers, mailing lists and more. I tried (until now in vain) to get the IP adress of the one who keeps adding me. [I know this sounds funny]

As I haven't given that specific email out for months, I'm clueless who it could be.

Does anyone know how to get close on these spammers?
Or what I see coming:
Does someone know about a email program which has a nice kill list? (Preferably one which kills mails already on the server) (Shareware is o.k. ;D )

Thanks for contributing,
JimmyClif

I had the same problem with my hotmail. It didn't exist for even 1 week and I already got spam. Sometimes the spammers just try some adresses, I got mails to a whole list pf ppl like: Argot, Argoth, Agoth and so on. So I made a new account with an underscore at the end. Problem solved. I got Argoth_@hotmail.com and I never had spam in 1 year!

And there are spam killers, just dunno which ones they are.

The mere fact that youve just included your unmodified email in your post is enough to allow spammers to grab it into their database. Spammers generally run robots which scour the net looking for quoted email addresses, they stop at nothing ;-)
Always try to screw their robots by modifying your email address in such a way that it takes human attention to correct it, before they mail you.

Most decent mail clients will allow you to set up rules based on the header, and just delete the mail from the server. I cant say Ive found a win32 mail client I like a lot, but I use Eudora at the moment. Its not too bad and supports the sort of rules you want

Finally, if you have a domain based email address, where anything before the @ will arrive to you, always use the username to help you track where youre email address was snatched from. IE, if for example you sign up for a newsletter at www.programmersheaven.com, subscribe as progheaven@yourpersonaldomain.com etc... If you suddenly get spammed on that address, you know who to blame.

(btw, im not suggesting programmersheaven are spammers. it was just an example ;-)

Carpathia & Argoth,

Thanks for trying to help, but I was talking about my POP3 private email account... I never put in on the net at all, and I use it only for business and for a few friends... Nonetheless, I have to say that I possibly gave it to no more than 15 people in 3 years...

Talking about my hotmail address, I have to admit that I don't really care how much it gets spammed... well, it's only a hotmail account and I don't have to download anything if I don't want to read it... not like my other one... (PS: I have up to 25 spams on hotmail on a busy day )

Back to topic... I'll definitively try out Eudora... even tho that I've been kinda happy with "TheBat" for a long time, only disadvantage it has, is that the filter rules apply just after downloading...

A question to finish off:

- Hypothetically: If someone grabbed your email address right now and used it to register on various pron lists and such, would it be possible to track that person down somehow?

That's what I suppose what is happening... but reply's to my abuse letters to various places are all unanswered

JimmyClif

PS: I hope not that programmersheaven are spammers

Heh, I can assure u they aren't spammers. Most POP3 accounts also have Telnet support, so u can delete them with Telnet. It has worked for me once when some friend mailed me an MPeg file of 10 Megs. (I have a 28K modem)

Another problem might be the fact you're using hotmail. Did you add yourself to the directory? That could be the problem...also I wouldn't be surprised if M$ was selling addresses...anything to make a few more $ for gate$.

Greetzs.
If you setup an email account with Lycos,
they make all of the headers visible.
Not magic by any means, but easier to track down
where it came from. I friend of mine used these headers
to bust sites that sent out unsolicited porn crap.
Many of the return emails weren't real anyways.
After a long email to the involved isps,
he did succeed in getting a couple of them shut down.
For what it's worth anyways.
Take Care.
