As a newbie, I have been reading the lessons and essays on the +ORC site. And it seems as most of those lessons are old technology. While I understand the lessons may be important from a fundamental point of view, I don't think they will help me with reversing new technology, and frankly I don't know where to begin. And correct me if I'm wrong about the lessons please. So my question is, what would be a good project, for a newbie like myself to embark on, that involves up to date software for reversing, so I can learne to use the tools, and understand how to tell what protection schemes are used in the software. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Howdy,
A few questions for you.

Do you know any "code"?
Have you gathered your "tools"?
Dont forget the manuals !!

If you are starting out "fresh" ,with no understanding
of windows assy lang and no understanding of hex
values, you need to find the easiest tuts on Krobar.

When you get a tut, get your manuals ready so you
can follow and understand what each thing means.
The manuals will be your reference guides, without them,
dont even bother.

Peace, Woodmann

Here is my two cents worth, since I am still a newbie. First the old stuff is still very important, because unlike windoze, the dos stuff relates directly with your machine (ie bios, video and disk). There are several areas to specialize in, broken into two groups, hardware (dongles and disk (floppy, hard and CD)) and software (keys, encrypted keys, FLEXM, and other stuff). The Gods can correct me if I am wrong.

I specialize in dongles since that is what most of my engineering software is protected with. If you can NOT program go and learn C or ASM.

To start, see fravia's archived site, fravia has a group called cracking for dummies.

For tools I would start with W32dasm89 with a very nice easy to use interface, and a hex editor.

Once you have mastered the basics take a look at Krobar site, Crackz's archived site, and others.

Good Luck

Chuddva:

"A Good Place to Start" is with the search button on the top of the forum. Using that feature you will find a thread from 12-19-2001 with this title where your question was asked and responded to by several members with suggestions on getting started. Among the useful suggestions was a reference to Krobar's and +Sandman. You might want to give it a look and practice using the search function, as it will often lead you to questions you are considering that have been asked one or more times in the recent past.

regards.
