View Full Version : Stupid Newbie Question!

Yeah, this probably is a dumb question. Today was my first day ever researching about cracking, and i'm pretty tired, and i've had to restart my computer many times in the past hour, so i'm kinda cranky and burnt out
One of the sites I visited was Cracking 4 Newbie (http://users.belgacom.net/blackb/). At the Newbie Cracking School there under Basic Lessons there was a thing on cracking Winzip that seemed fairly do-able. My winzip is already registered, but I have a program that seemed to be kinda similar.
This program (tapetracker) has a regular serial # protection thing, and it also has a 30 day timer, which isn't expired. I was hoping to be able to emulate the winzip crack. I downloaded softICE and edited winice.dat as suggested (although the last things i removed the ";" from said for win95, and i have 98... i just realized that...) So then I opened my program and went to the register screen and put in a random string of #'s. I opened softice and typed 'bpx getdlgitemtexta', then went back to my program and hit okay. It said the serial was wrong, but softice didn't do anything. In the winzip tutorial it is supposed to pop open...
So my question is, what went wrong? Does that just not work for my program? Is something wrong with softICE? Am I just being dumb and not realizing something obvious?

Like I said before, I'm really tired (and a real newbie), so I'm probably just missing something obvious.

thanks in advance...

Hi Bob Dobbs Jr.

Well you tried to use a Tutorial that was ment for Winzip on a different program.
If a program looks almost the same as another program it doesn't have to be the same protection.
Like my quote works here:

"Don't trust the Outside, trust the InSiDe !!!"

Maybe you can try to make Winzip unregistered again and then try to crack it yourself with or without the Tutorial.
To make Winzip unregistered find the following key in your registry:

"HKLM\Software\Nico Mak Computing\"

Or something similiar but i think it's the same.
Be sure to backup the Name/Serial number in case you don't succeed, you'll never know
Then try to crack Winzip yourself.
Hope this helps...

Cya...

Hi Bobb,

First, don't get discouraged...most all of us were in your shoes at one point or another. As for why Sice does not break on GetDlgItemTextA, there are other text input API's than GetDlgItemTextA. It is quite possible that your program is using one of the other text retrieval functions. For starts you can try GetWindowText, GetWindowTextA, GetDlgItemText (w/o the 'A'), and hmemcpy. You should also disassemble the proggy with Wdasm and have a look at the imported functions. That will surely give you some clues to set breakpoints on ;-)

Good Luck,
