There are several tutorials in TKC's releases that make reference of the search function in Sice, but the amount of f's seem to differ each time, and there is no explanation of what is actually being searched for. Can someone shed a little bit of light on this function?

The file SoftICE command reference.pdf is either within your numega folder or available from the numega site.
There you can obtain a detailed explanation about your question. The number of F vary from tutorial to tutorial probably because nobody count them when they type them.
The "default" would be EIGHT F, so you will be searching your string in all the available space of virtual memory.
