I have done so much work on fixing this problem. finally, i had figured out what was causing it, but i have a new problem:
ndis.vxd is conflicting with softice or vise-versa and i cant figure out how to fix this problem because ndis.vxd is a network driver and is what i need to access the internet, i can load softice when i choose not to load ndis.vxd but then i cant access the internet. wich is crap, because im still learning softice and i need access to the internet for information on softice when i need it.
does anyone know how i can fix this? is there a way i can get softice to ignore this driver or vise-versa?
im using windows 98, and i have Cable(i put this down for obvious reasons). and pentium 3, 296mb ram
if you need anymore information, tell me.
Thanks

Howdy,
I think MS makes a utility to debug ndis.vxd if not I am
sure you can find out how to debug it.
Is softice breaking on ndis.vxd?
How about a cheap and cheesy solution and update the driver.
There are different versions for different win 98 releases.
Peace, Woodmann

well, faults are off, so sice isnt breaking on anything
i'll try the update, thanks
but before i do, this problem has been like this since before i even had cable, i had high speed before.
but i'll try the driver update

Hi,
extract the files ndis.vxd from your original cd and replace the old
ones.
Hopes this helps.

OK,
Lets start again. What did you do to fix the original VFAT problem?
Was it this: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q139063&
Next, what is the network card and the details (version # et al)
What exactly happens when you try to run softice and the network driver at the same time.

im not sure if this is what you mean, but:
i chose not to load ndis.vxd when i booted up my computer, and softice worked fine.

i have looked at alot of pages like this, non of them solve my problem

D-Link DFE-530TX PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter

computer crashes, gives me this error:
VFAT Device Initialization Failed
A device or resource required by VFAT is not present or is unavailable. VFAT cannot continue loading.
System halted.
Although, softice does load the settings first, so i know softice isnt corrupt. After it loads the settings from winice.dat it sits for a bit, then i get the error.
i have also did a logged boot, nothing looked "suspicious" in the bootlog file.
(thanks for helping, by the way)

Suggestion:
Consider Altering the order in which NDIS.VXD and SoftIce.exe are loaded.
You can monitor windows in a stepwise fashion and find out when NDIS.VXD gets loaded: By Config.sys? By Autoexec.bat? by the win.ini etc? explore ways to delay its loading until Sice is active. Or the other way around.
Can you manually load Sice after the computer and Windows have completed the boot process?
you will not have kernel level debugging, but at least will help you isolate the level of conflict.
Have you tried placing another network card?
Have you tried moving the network card to a master slot in the PCI bus, or to a slave slot?
Have you tried other, newer or older versions of Sice?
Look at here:
h**p://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q139063&
And see what may you learn.
DO NOT GIVE UP YET!
