View Full Version : Serious softice problem

I have DriverStudio 2.7, with Softice 4.2.7.562, ROR release. When I try to start softice "net start ntice", my whole system freezes! Hard lock, no mouse, keyboard, only a power cycle fixes it.
I've tried this with both XP SP1 and (just installed a moment ago) 2K SP3. Any ideas? What can I do?

what video mode are you using? if not the universal (windowed) one, try using that

Yeah, it's the generic video mode. You think it could be SP3? Does anyone have it working on an SP2 machine?

I have the same problem, except it happens on xp_sp1, don't know what combo of hw/sw factors determines this, regardless if with/without nticedump it stops system response.
No solution. Previous builds didn't work but at least they started.
Only workarounds I know about to switch to another debugger or use it on Windows9x/me, it works well then.

Take a look over at DriverHeaven.net, they are quite helpful and have solved many a video problem.
Use their SEARCH function, type in your videocard manufacture and maybe you'll find a common thread that suits you.

Use a monochrome card and an old monochrome monitor.
Thats how we had to do it in the early days.
Softice still allows you to do this.
The problem is that most monochrome cards are ISA and most motherboards are not.
I keep one of my machines around which still has one ISA slot.

Hi,
I was actually about to post details of a similar problem: I am trying to run si405 on win2k sp3, on a compaq laptop. The system freezes when I hit CTRL-D, and unfreezes and resumes normal operation when I hit CTRL-D again. I have tried a variety of video modes, have tried disabling mouse (I am aware there is an issue with Synaptic touchpads on laptops - I have tried removing it from device manager and using a standard ps2 mouse). I have tried telling it to patch or not patch keyboard driver, but still, always the same behaviour.
Anyone have any further suggestions?
Cheers

Hi,
I used to have problem installing softice also... on win2k softice 4.05 is incompatible with GeForce II and above gfx card, i installed Driver Studio and softice runs fine now... Yep, DS 2.7 on Win2k SP3...
I have also seen cases of Driver Studio not working on new GeForce 4 card on both win2k and winXP so maybe that is the case for you guys... i have not known any solution for GF4 gfx card though installing on win98 seems to solve the puzzle...

Yes DS 2.7 will possibly fix your problem.
Running XP I would still have my NV driver crash on occasion
with my GeForce 3 card.
So I went out and got an ATI card.
I find the best for debugging.
Have been since Sice 1.(something or other).
But your problem sounds to me to be a video driver problem.
Be sure you have a version of directX to which you have a video driver which is for the same version of directX, and use the Universal video drivers.

You do not want directx 5 for example with a video driver only compatable to directx 4.
Plus knowing microsoft, I wouldn't beleive that a video driver compatable to directx 8 would be compatable to directx 5.
I have had bad experiences with this.
It may not always be the case.
