hello,

some days ago i ran into some trouble with installing softice on my notebook(os is win2k sp4). i got a release of driverstudio 2.7(softice and some other tools) and installed it. it worked pretty fine till i came to the reboot. when i restart my notebook shortly after i get asked to press f8 for other startup options i get a bluescreen and my system is halted. i couldnt get my system back running so i installed a new, clean win2k and tried reinstalling driverstudio(this time only softice no other tools) with the same result, bluescreen. i decided to NOT try it again, instead i used a copy of softice (v4.05) i had laying on my disk and it worked nice. but now there another thing that worries me. when i break and start working in softice and leave it again, my temerature sensor for cpu raises up to 70+ degrees. does anyone know
1. why driverstudio crashes with a bluescreen
2. why softice heats up the cpu so much

regards xoder

DriverStudior 2.7 installed on this laptop without problem. What did the blue screen say?

Regarding tempature, do you have a "Speed Step" mobile laptop? If so, SI is probably not lowering the speed the CPU is running at.

Another thought... Some of the laptops around here have tempature controlled fans (i.e. does your fan suddenly make noise for a little bit and then go back to quite mode?). If you have one of these, try pressing "control-D" when the fan comes on and see if the fan ever turns off until you press "control-D" again to exit SI window. It might be the fan is software controlled (but I would hope not!!!).

1. why driverstudio crashes with a bluescreen: You may want to search in the board the troubles that Sice have with certain Graphic card Drivers and some times mouse drivers. In my case, I have Sice DS 2.7 installled on a Laptop, but I cannot use the touch pad, because Sice goes crazy. That is one good place to start. Does the computer ask the question about Loading Sice display driver and then SoftIce while Win2K is booting? What happens if You say no? does Win2K boot OK?

2. It happens to me also. When the CPU is tied with Sice, all the routines that deal with the cooling system and the speed control will not run, as Sice traps most of the interrupts. I see no solution to this problem, it is the nature of the beast. Your CPU life may be shortened as a consequence, but look at the bright side: You will have to buy a new and more powerful laptop sooner.

sorry but i dont remember the message of the bluescreen anymore, but i think it was something with a kernel module.
for the fan problem, i have something like a workaround. i found to software to control my fans, so before switching to sice i turn them on with full speed, so temperature only goes up to ~60 degrees.

naides: if you gonna send me the money for a new powerfull notebook id highly appreciate it
