Why not? Instead of all the useless messages on this forum that all say "learn to search" why not just paste a link to a FAQ that has all the information.

This board is unorganized, cluttered and random. That is not a bad thing! But for people getting started it is. A noise free version thats some sort of FAQ that discusses all the standard usual Softice configuration issues and the ADDR/context issues would solve this. It would be more organized and easier to read and understand. Basically I am saying someone should take the time to take all the fragments here and organize them coherently. Searching is always good but there are some basics that keep coming up here over and over and a new thread is gained but no new information. I dont have much time for reverse engineering these days I just feel this might be an alternate strategy to help people getting started to resolve these practical issues. Who has the time and wants to spend the time doing so would provide a valuable resource to everyone and greatly simplify and organize and get rid of noise. Other topics fall under this category also. The board should be used for the out of the ordinary situations or new ground that hasnt been explored which is what in many cases it is used for(which is why its such a wonderful board and I still browse it).

Just my thoughts! Glad to see a lot of people are still here . Oh ya, I will be back.

I volunteer Santch and Me to do the job, How do you like it?

I agree, but would it really reduce the noise? You'll still get people who will come along and say, not to isolate a recent post but - they've never used Softice before, but they want to build an Arma unloader, so how do you configure Sice, but in the meantime can you send me an Arma unloader? Sure, you could point them to a shiny new DS Faq, but would they really care or benefit?

So add a few stock items concerning Sice basics to a faq, Mammon's tales, Rhyader's bp doc, Crackz getting started guide, Tornado's notes, ADDR and XP considerations are already covered in the existing FAQ thanks to Zairon, whatever comes up from a few "Softice/DS" searches, etc. etc. Well, even if that was made available, it might help a few deserving newcomers who have actually made the effort to also read the official documentation but are stuck, and this would help them the most. Great, glad to help.

But, I think unless this 'unofficial' DS faq was complete with a very easy to use index of all the niggling details that would immediately answer their question, many would still ignore it, couldn't be bothered with the effort of searching through the pages of information, and would rather ask their question directly on the board for a quick answer. It appears to be human nature.

It is a good idea, and we've considered this and more before, but I don't know, it just seems a monumental task to effectively reduce the 'noise' level with yet another faq. I think as a newbie you tend to be overwhelmed with the amount of info you need to learn and the scope of the RCE thing. It's only after some time some people learn the patience and virtues of searching for their own answers, and recognizing when a question should be asked that deserves asking.

We all get tired of reading (and writing) the Seach and Big Red Letters replies, and what sometimes becomes mean spirited and flamebait threads. If there is an effective way of getting rid of them I'm all for it, in the meantime I'll vote for Naides directive

Cheers,
Kayaker

Howdy,

I will be the last person to argue this

Whoever is willing to undertake such a project,
SI, Arma, Flex, other debuggers et al;
You know, the topics that have been answered to death,
they/you willing be doing a GREAT service for the entire
RCE community to compile these into an easy to
read RCE type manual for each topic.

When you need a tut, where do you go-Krobar
When you need Dongle help where do you go - CrackZ

Who shall offer such help ?
I will do one topic, who else ?

guys,

this will not reduce the number of silly requests and like.

beside that, searching by yourself is not only good for the board, but also for the 'personality' of newbie coders.

I am serious. It is not difficult to do, Actually cut and paste may acomplish more than 50% of the job. It can be updated every now and again when fundamental new issues occur.

Will it reduce the number of elementary questions? probably not, but Such is life, for a few genuinely dedicated newbies, it may be a useful resource, because the data will be compiled and referenced in a easier to search format.

Another idea: When you search the board, you only get hits among the postings. Is it possible, plausible and advisable to include the FAQ material in the search space, perhaps with high priority, so the FAQ answers are the first hits?
