***EDIT.... i searched the forums and found a post to fix my problem, but i could not post a reply in that forum for whatever reason. here is what my reply was gonna be,.....**
sorry to bring back such an old post, but i'm a noob and i searched the forum for my problem and this thread is exactly what happens to me.
as you can tell, those links are dead. wutever0 is unregistered so no email to contact him.
i have winme. i installed the debug kit for winme. installed softice 4.05..?? changed debugger.exe with a new one. i restart windows only to come to a black screen with a blinking underscore iin the upper left corner. so after about 5 mins of waiting, i hit Enter and a full screen of softice blinks for a split second, then the screen goes black again and windows continues loading. then another screen comes up saying the AVG could not load. thats my anti-virus program. i hit enter to bypass the screen. now windows loads fine afterwards. i hit ctrl-D and softice pops up!! Great!!
so my problem is, there is no winice.exe in the autoexec.bat. the config.sys is blank. everytime i boot windows, i have to press enter to get past the black screen and press enter again to bypass the anti-virus app could not load, please re-install AVG..
so how do i solve this black screen, and AVG not loading? i heard of a Dos patch for winme, but i have not tried it. will this help? does anyone have a mirror of the above links or the files needed?
btw, i uninstalled softice and had to rename the debugger.exe to another file to load windows properly. including AVG. nothing in autoexec.bat references debugger.exe. so where does this file come from in the startup process. is there an .ini file?
hope someone can help. thanx.

Windows ME is half 98 and half NT.
You will not find any entry for ICE in config or autoexec (that's the domain of the 95-98-98SE)
Instead, ICE is implemented as a driver. This driver is loaded at runtime (you can also change it to load after windows loads).
The black screen that you see is the SOFTICE Universal Video Driver being loaded.
Perhaps your AVG does not like SoftICE or cannot run on a patched video driver.
If you want to remove the black screen do this:
1. Go to C:\
2. Open the file boot.ini
3. Remove the /nogui option
4. It works.
And we have to do something about the AVG of yours. If you're not using McAfee or Norton, you're not using anything.

ok, i just checked my C:\ drive in the root and there was no boot.ini file. i even had " show hidden files on"...??? where is it?
anyway, after uninstalling Softice a few days ago, i noticed my cd drive no longer works. no power to it and the bios does not recognise it.
does softice install or replace certain drivers, then when uninstalled, it uninstalls a needed driver to detect the cd drive.??? i mean, the cd drive isnt even in the device manager.
any help here.?? thx.

hmmm, i wanna get my cd drive working before i mess with softice again.
i opened my pc and the connections were good. but the bios still doesnt detect it. funny thing in windows is that i have 2 hard drives on the 1st IDE slot, master and slave, and the slave HD is acting strange too. i cant open any .exe's. it creates a page fault in itself..?? NO VIRUSES either!
the cd drive is on the 2nd IDE master by it self. not detected.
ok, this is the second time this has happened actually. i'm just remembering. a few weeks ago my cd drive was working fine, then i tried installing softice and messing with it only to find out it did not work. so i uninstalled it. the next day i noticed my cd drive wasnt working and my 2nd HD wasnt working great either. i didnt know why.?? then a few days later, my bro got it working while i wasnt home. everthing worked fine, even my HD. i dont know how he did it and i didnt ask.
so now, just a few days ago i read on the net about winme compatibility with softice and the winme ddk debug kit. i needed to install that to get softice working. so i did and then installed softic, set it up right. rebooted, got the black screen, AVG could not load....blah ......blah. skipped that screen , loaded windows and bam, softice loaded. i didnt like the black screen etc, so i uninstalled softice. the next day, my damn cd drive isnt working again..!!!! see a coincidence??? uninstalling softice removes my cd drive and it doesnt work or whatever...!!!
so before i tell my bro to fix my pc,......again, i'm wondering if you softice experts can figure this one out. what exactly does softice install? does it replace any .dll's, vxd's etc?? i wanna get my cd drive working again , before i ask my bro to fix it.
thx.

SOFTICE WILL NOT CHANGE YOUR BIOS SETTNGS
SOFTICE WILL NOT DISABLED WHATEVER EXE HDD.
You should check your bios seetings if its all auto.
You should change your ide cable.
You should find a technician and check it

Totally OT, but that sounds exactly like what DaemonTools did to one of my systems once. Installed it, all sorts of problems, CD drives vanishing & harddrives on the blip. Removed it, everything back to normal. Wierd, and now I use Alcohol.

my bios settings are all auto.
i swear that softice is the culprit. i know it is. the sad thing is that all my apps are on the 2nd hd and i cant load nothing from that hd. i'll download softice again to my master hd and install it to see if my cd drive comes back alive.
man, this sux.

Softce doesnt work with AVG loaded
if you F8 at startup and step through and press N to the AVG lines it will load
i use a windows loader which was written by the icedump team and find it excellent
u just put it into C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32 and copy 3 files into windows folder and u can select whether to load Softice or not every time
